Job description

About the role and our team

We are looking for plumbers and Electricians to join our supportive team in the Department of Infrastructure.

As part of our team, you will support the electrical or plumbing services within the building portfolio. The Government’s property portfolio is very wide ranging and includes the hospitals, care homes, schools, University College Isle of Man, National Sports Centre, ports and general government buildings, any or all of which you may be required to work in, giving you real variety in your work.

You will be able to work independently most of the time, but there is regular interaction with the team and some projects will require working alongside colleagues including those from the same or other trades.

Some of your duties will include:

Electrician

  • Fault finding and calibration on a wide range of engineering plant and equipment such as electrical distribution (single and three-phase), lighting installations, fire alarm systems, emergency lighting, patient call systems, standby generator installations, UPS systems and other building services equipment.
  • Fault finding and calibration on automated building systems including door access, intruder alarms, building management systems, lighting controls and mechanical plant.
  • Undertake electrical installations in line with IEE Electrical Regulations and inspect & test in accordance with Guidance Note 3.

Plumber

  • Be responsible for maintaining, fault finding and calibration on a wide range of engineering plant and equipment including low pressure hot & cold water systems, steam raising plant and associated equipment, humidification systems and associated equipment, steam sterilisers and decontamination, medical gas piped systems, ventilation systems and associated equipment, chilled water and associated systems, laundry equipment, natural gas and oil systems and building management services.
  • You will undertake maintenance repairs, minor improvements and capital work across the Department’s property portfolio, largely in an unsupervised capacity. This may include working throughout the island or any other property for which PE&H is responsible as directed by management ensuring compliance with PE&H’s safety standards and procedures.

Qualification Requirements

It is an essential requirement that the successful candidate must hold the following qualification:

Electrician:

  • City and Guilds or Level 3 Certificate in Electrical Installation
  • Electrical Apprenticeship
  • AM2 Qualified or working towards and proven competence

Plumber:

  • Recognised apprenticeship or other approved training scheme plus relevant experience plus City & Guilds Part II or NVQ Level 3 or other recognised course at the appropriate level.

Upon reaching the top of your pay band, you may be eligible to receive an additional payment on top of your salary. This is paid to employees to reflect additional skills, qualifications and responsibilities developed within the role. Those qualifying for the 4% rating are classed as the standard trade i.e. ‘Electrician’ or ‘Plumber’. Those qualifying for the 12% rating are classed as ‘Approved Electrician’ or ‘Approved Plumber’. You will receive an additional pay allowance when working overtime and on call (rota basis).

Additional information

Please note a basic police check is required for this post,which the Department will cover the cost of for you. A full valid driving licence is required for this role. A uniform and a vehicle for work use will also be provided.

A relocation package and interview expenses are not available for this role.
