Red Snapper Recruitment are recruiting for a Police Constable to work on the island of Alderney, in the Channel Islands.

Job Summary

The Alderney Constable will work as part of a small team, responsible for the provision of policing services on the Island of Alderney. This will be victim focussed and will meet the long-term needs of the community by providing lasting solutions to community issues. The Officer will work with agencies, volunteers and stakeholders with a view to improving the quality of life of the communities in Alderney.

The post holder will undertake a broad range of duties, fostering an ethos of community style policing, to address issues in accordance with the Service Delivery Plan and to ensure Alderney is safe; maintaining a high quality, accessible and responsive service. Due to the unique nature of the policing provision in Alderney and in addition to the statutory role of protecting life and property, preserving order, preventing crime and detecting offenders, the post holder will be required to undertake Special Branch duties at the Ports. This will include liaison with Customs and Harbour Offices and acting as gaoler when individuals are detained.

Main duties and responsibilities

  • To adopt a problem-solving approach to community issues through the identification of threats to repeat and vulnerable victims, encouraging a partnership approach and identifying and using the skills and abilities of others, both internal and external to the organisation.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with colleagues, the Guernsey Border Agency, and community partners to drive collaboration across Law Enforcement and wider public services provision in support of the Service Delivery Plan objectives.
  • To support the Alderney Sergeant and represent Law Enforcement within the Island community and attend any inter-agency meetings as necessary.
  • To understand and apply primary and secondary legislation and best practice guidance to policing functions and activities including PPACE and the National Decision Making Model.
  • Good understanding of Problem Orientated Policing approaches e.g.: restorative justice, Community Impact Assessments etc and gathering of intelligence in accordance with the National Intelligence Model and local policy.
  • Comply with the appropriate standards of conduct, integrity and professionalism expected of the role and to consistently comply with the rights and obligations relating to Human Rights and Data Protection.
  • Conduct full and thorough investigations into matters or offences, seeking advice or assistance of specialist or supervisory Officers or other Agencies as necessary, and undertake the arrest and processing of suspects where required.
  • Speak to and reassure the public and victims of crime, giving advice on crime prevention.
  • Undertake the searching of persons, vehicles and premises to locate evidence and the recording of circumstances, including the secure handling of property which comes into their possession.
  • Prepare files for Court and other interested parties and attend Court / inter-agency meetings when required.
  • Justify and professionally account for actions to ensure adherence to legal frameworks and key working principles, policies and guidance.
  • Monitor own personal and professional development whilst seeking continuous improvement and new ways of working to contribute towards achieving organisational objectives.

Person Specification

  • Passed probationary period in current force with a minimum of 4 years’ relevant experience in the role of Police Constable.
  • Valid driving licence and minimum of basic driving licence.
  • Considered suitably fit following a full medical examination by the Force Medical Examiner (refer to Recruitment Brochure regarding medical and dental requirements).

Undertaken within Role

  • Completion of transferee induction course.
  • Completion of 6-month probation with Guernsey Police.
  • Annual mandatory First Aid and Officer Safety Training.
  • Custody Training Course.
  • Restorative Justice Training.

Other

  • Vetting Levels: Home Affairs Level 2 vetting.
  • Warrant Status: Warranted position.
