Policy Analyst (Part Time, Fixed Term)

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance from 1 May 2024 to 30 April 2025 (please note that the funding for this role has an end date of 30 April 2025 due to limited funds for a specific purpose, and the contract must finish by that date). We are looking to recruit a part-time fixed-term Policy Analyst in the Department of Sociology working .5 FTE (2.5 days a week) to co-write policy and public engagement documents for a broad range of stakeholders relevant to the Planetary Praxis research group projects, which focus on planetary problems, from air pollution to deforestation and climate change. We especially consider how technological approaches to observing and managing these problems influence social life, and how they facilitate or limit democratic engagement and equality. You will engage with research impact, engagement and knowledge exchange for the Planetary Praxis research group, including but not limited to Smart Forests (ERC-funded), the Centre for Landscape Regeneration (NERC-funded), and other projects as they arise. You will research, co-write, and develop strategies for developing and translating research for various stakeholders and publics. You will draft policies that allow Planetary Praxis research to become more widely used in practice. Your key duties will be to: - Co-write research-led policy documents for leaders in government, NGOs, charity, industry, communities and publics, both nationally and internationally. - Define key communication aims and objectives for the research group and research projects, and design and implement that communication. - Liaise and build networks with internal and external stakeholders, contacts and networks for future collaborations. You will be able to adapt to changing research outputs and the wider environment. You will be a skilled communicator able to create and convey material of a specialist or technical nature persuasively and clearly for public audiences. You will be able to comprehend research of a high academic level and translate it into policy documents. You should have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders. Previous experience in writing and delivering persuasive public engagement and policy documents based on academic research and experience in communicating complex information to a diverse audience would be an advantage. The Department of Sociology is part of a joint undergraduate degree programme in Human, Social and Political Sciences (HSPS), which also has a vibrant MPhil and PhD programme. There are currently about 80 students working on PhDs on a diverse range of topics in sociology.
