About us

University College London (UCL) is one of the foremost research centres in Quantum Computing in the UK. UCL’s Quantum Science and Technology Institute, UCLQ, has over 30 research groups in both theoretical and experimental research in Quantum Technologies. Prof Dan Browne leads a large research group in the department of Physics and Astronomy work on the theory of quantum computation, with interests ranging from fault tolerant quantum computation and error correction, NISQ and near-term Quantum Computing to quantum architectures.

About the role

This post is a post-doctoral research position undertaking research into the potential for Quantum LDPC Codes to provide practical low overhead quantum computation. The post is part of a recently funded EPSRC grant “Compilation and Verification of Quantum Software in the Noisy and Approximate Regime” and is key to delivering its outcomes. It is a collaboration with the research groups of Aleks Kissenger (Oxford) and Noah Linden (Bristol).

The position is funded for 12 months in the first instance, until 31st March 2025.

Candidates will need to upload a CV (including a list of publications), a statement of research interests and plans (2 pages maximum), and two reference letters. Candidates whose research experience is not directly in Quantum error correction should address this in their statement and explain why they are suitable for the role. A cover letter can be included using the “Statement in Support of your Application” section of the online form.

Informal enquiries regarding the vacancy can be made to: Prof. Dan Browne, d.browne@ucl.ac.uk

About you

The successful applicant will have a PhD in the theory of Quantum Computing or a related discipline (e.g. theoretical physics, mathematics, theoretical computer science). They may have direct experience in compilers for quantum computers, or they may be interested in moving into that area. Support will be provided in developing your knowledge in appropriate areas. Candidates should also have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B (salary £37,332 - £39,980 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
