Principal Capital Accountant

Macildowie are working with a dynamic and forward-thinking local authority located in Nottinghamshire. Committed to serving their community, they are currently seeking a highly skilled and qualified Principal Capital Accountant to join our finance team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional to contribute to the financial management and strategic decision-making process of the Council.

Key Responsibilities:

Capital Budgeting and Planning:

• Lead the development and monitoring of the capital budget, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and financial regulations.
• Provide expert advice on capital expenditure, ensuring projects are financially viable and adhere to approved budgets.

Financial Reporting:

• Prepare accurate and timely financial reports related to capital projects, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
• Collaborate with internal stakeholders to provide insights into capital expenditure, highlighting areas for improvement and efficiency.

Asset Management:

• Oversee the accounting for the Council's capital assets, including depreciation calculations and impairment assessments.
• Work closely with departments to ensure accurate recording and reporting of capital asset transactions.

Financial Governance and Compliance:

• Ensure adherence to financial regulations, policies, and procedures related to capital accounting.
• Stay updated on relevant accounting standards and regulations, providing guidance to colleagues as needed.

Financial Analysis and Advice:

• Conduct financial analysis on capital projects, offering insights and recommendations to support strategic decision-making.
• Collaborate with other departments to provide financial advice and guidance on capital-related matters.

Team Leadership:

• Lead and motivate a team of finance professionals, fostering a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and accountability.
• Provide mentoring and development opportunities to enhance the skills and capabilities of the capital accounting team.

Qualifications and Experience:

Qualified accountant (CIPFA, ACA, ACCA, CIMA, or equivalent).

• Proven experience in capital accounting within a public sector environment, ideally local government.
• In-depth knowledge of financial regulations, accounting standards, and best practices related to capital accounting.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to provide strategic financial advice.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels.
