Location: Bootle/Cheltenham/London with flexible working options

Fast-paced. Incredibly varied. Packed with purpose. A new world awaits at ONR.

The challenge

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is an evolving public corporation. Essentially, we’re responsible for regulating nuclear safety, security, safeguards, health and safety and the transport of radioactive materials. Join us as a Principal Inspector specialising in Cyber Security, and you’ll find an interesting and fast-paced world where your work will be critical. Ready to meet stakeholders, uphold standards and take on varied challenges? This is your opportunity.

The role

Your primary task is to help us regulate the civil nuclear industry so risks are managed appropriately. It means assessing duty holders’ Cyber Security arrangements, performing inspections and checking arrangements at facilities. We’ll expect you to ensure the implementation of technical Cyber Security controls to protect information technology, operational technology, and sensitive nuclear information. It’s a key responsibility – but it's only half the story.

At this level, we’ll also look to you to lead multi-disciplined teams and to represent ONR. You’ll be liaising with other regulators, Government (and non-Governmental) bodies, international regulators, duty holders, colleagues from other specialisms and senior managers across the nuclear industry. Along with this varied remit will come responsibility and the need for strategic thinking. It’s important you can understand risks, prioritise them and instigate interventions with the help of your team.

The person

Credible and influential, you’ll be ready to make an impact right from day one. You’ll have a relevant qualification (for example an NCSC-certified degree) and full professional membership of an appropriate professional body, such as CIISec or the BCS. If you have equivalent qualifications and experience, we’ll consider these too. But, whatever your background, you must have an impressive depth and breadth of Cyber Security knowledge covering cyber defence including detection, response, and recovery.

People skills are just as important, along with leadership and tenacity. You’ll be a skilled manager who can inspire teams, influence senior stakeholders and deal with  leaders across the nuclear industry. Communication will therefore be key, both in person and on paper, so you need to be articulate, open and persuasive. With this profile, you’ll connect with diverse contacts, while drawing on your experience in a high hazard or critical industry.

The rewards

We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with this role attracting a salary of £87,659 - £95,620 and an £8,500 market rate allowance plus an additional £4,052 London Weighting Allowance if applicable. Furthermore, you’ll be eligible for a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits), and generous holiday entitlement.

About us

ONR is a Public Corporation with a mission to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations. Our staff are drawn from a wide range of professional backgrounds with specialist inspectors to deliver our core business including civil engineering, radiological protection, human factors, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and nuclear physics. Together they’re involved in everything from assessing safety and security arrangements, inspecting nuclear sites and communicating our decisions, to training new recruits and representing the UK and ONR nationally and internationally.
