Job description

My clients are a highly innovative energy technology solution provider with the mission to help enable the global renewable energy transition. Offering a unique stability measurement service for power grid operators (transmission and distribution), to enable power grid operators more precise control of their grid. They have approx. 200+ patents granted globally, with offices in the UK, Finland and others being opened around the world. To date it has achieved more than 100% revenue growth YoY and its business plan will continue this level of growth based on a strong global pipeline. Backed by high profile investors including BGF, Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Eaton, Toshiba and Accenture.    

The main role of the Principal Power Systems Engineer is to support the ongoing business growth through technical project leadership whilst investigating and implementing new technologies relating to power system monitoring and operations. The position is within the R&D department with a particular focus on leading the development of the emerging System Strength service offering through technical project leadership and leading the support of key System Strength customer projects delivery. 

You will have sign-off responsibilities and lead technical contributions whilst a power system engineer will support you. 

You will often act as an interface between TSOs/DNOs and the development team, ensuring that products and services are relevant and valuable customers with a clear focus on System Strength. This will involve maintaining relationships with TSOs/DNOs, understanding their requirements and effectively communicating and prioritising customer features.    

Responsibilities   

• Act as the technical lead on multiple global System Strength projects, be responsible for the technical project scope, elements of solution architecture, technical deliverables and ensure the highest quality for our customers  

• Support customers and the sales team by describing technical content and driving sale conversion by earning technical trust with the customer – you need to ‘speak their language’ and understand their pain points to suggest and provide valuable solutions on time and at high professional quality 

• Support Project Managers in project costing, scoping decisions and translating customer technical requirements into actionable work items   

• Help identify and mitigate project delivery risks.   

• Support proposal development and management reporting.   

• Support new product development by applying Power Systems modelling, signal processing, and/or machine learning and analysis techniques.   

• Work closely with Commercial and Operational functions to ensure new and existing products can be fully delivered.   

KEY SKILLS:  

• Ability to work in a multi-tasking environment without constant supervision. 

• Innovative with deep technical knowledge of power system/system strength challenges and ongoing solutions globally.   

• Ability to reduce complexity into key, scalable requirements and to communicate effectively both in internal and external contexts.   

• Able to wear both technical and commercial ‘hats’, experience of techno-economic assessments and to communicate and engage effectively at senior/c level.  

• Experience in scoping, delivery or operation of Grid, Utility or Energy Services.   

• Willingness to travel occasionally.   

• Degree in power system engineering, mathematics, or other quantitative discipline.   

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS  

• PhD in electrical engineering with an emphasis on Power Systems with 4+ years of experience or Master’s degree with 7+ years of experience.  

• Knowledgeable in power system challenges and phenomena occurring/developing as a result of the transition to net zero and the increased integration of inverter-based renewable energy sources to the grid, e.g. oscillations, low system strength, low inertia, etc.  

• Experience in a R&D environment/role is a plus.  

• Background in power system modelling and dynamic simulations (i.e. DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, PSS/e, etc).  

• Background and/or knowledge of programming (i.e. Python, Matlab, etc).  

• Experience in costing and tendering response related work.  

• Experience in presenting technical content in conferences.  

• Experience in a client-facing role in addition to any operational roles.  

• Knowledge of smart grid technologies from a DSO or TSO environment.  

• Background and/or knowledge of system/architecture design – e.g. SCADA, data protocols and secondary plant configuration is a plus.  

• Background in/knowledge of signal processing, and/or pattern recognition/machine learning techniques is a plus.
