Scope
Carrying out Safety and Reliability activities associated with Cyber UK products as part of our engineering team, within the Cyber UK Business Unit, delivering multiple concurrent research, development and production programmes ranging from tens of £k to several £m.
Responsible for / Key responsibilities
- Perform requirements and design assessments to ensure that hazards are identified, assessed, eliminated and/or controlled in a systematic way through the development life cycle.
- Carry out Safety and Reliability activities (hazard analysis, safety assessment analysis, failure mode analysis, generating FMEA/FMECA) with the goal of prevention, detection and correction of design anomalies, weak parts and workmanship, thereby influencing the design and development of Cyber UK products.
- As this role covers a wide range of experience the successful candidate will have a good foundation in Safety and Reliability engineering and is passionate about furthering their learning and development within the Safety and Reliability discipline.
- Produce Safety and Reliability documentation, including planning documents, in line with company standards to meet project requirements.
- Accurately estimates work of self and others; identifies cost-effective solutions in terms of both development time and materials; delivers predictably and increases team’s ability to do the same.
- Requires only general direction to perform effectively; is not subject to supervision or close management.
- Generate inputs required for product level design reviews.
- Reviews and signs off significant technical documents.
- Provides specialist knowledge and support to the wider engineering team; recognised as a domain expert inside the company, and possibly with external bodies.
- Mentors and coaches less experienced engineers; shares knowledge willingly and constructively.
- Proposes and champions ideas for improvement that support innovation and make the engineering organisation more efficient.
- Actively look for opportunities to improve processes used by engineering development and propose changes.
- Experience with the following Defence standards: Def Stan 00-56, 00-40, 00-45, 00-45, MIL-STD 1629, MIL-HDB 217F, ARP4761 (for Airbourne Products)
- Manage security of information as defined in the Security manual.
- Experience in some of the following areas would be advantageous, but not mandatory to be considered for this role.
- Capability to review electronic design and development within a Safety and Reliability context.
- Understanding and experience of data capture in terms of Technical Publications, Training, Contractor Logistic Support (CLS), Integrated Logistics Support (ILS), Logistic Support Analysis (LSA) and WLC/LCC
- Awareness of supportability aspects of a programme.
Role requirements
- Essential:
- Willing and able to obtain, and maintain, SC security clearance.
- Willing and able to obtain, and maintain, DV security clearance.
Qualifications / skills required
- Essential:
- Degree in an engineering, mathematical or science-based subject or equivalent experience
- Proficient in the full life cycle development demonstrated multiple projects.
- Proficient in safety & reliability tools e.g. for developing FMEA / FMECA.
- Has a variety of engineering methods and techniques; applies and adapts these as necessary to create solutions.
- Proven experience with Engineering design methodologies. For example, the ‘V’ Model – Requirements, architecture, detailed design, Implementation, Integration, Test, Validation & Verification.
- Ability to read, interpret and understand hardware schematics.
- Experience of version control, change control and bug tracking tools and systems.
- Pro-active and self-motivated with good problem solving experience.
- Learns quickly, willing to think “outside the box” using rigorous logic and methods to solve complex problems
- Helpful and assistive approach to resolution of technical challenges and understands the need to change where necessary and adjusts accordingly
- Positive attitude with ability to work as part of a team or alone with little supervision or direction
- Good communication skills (presentation, written and verbal)
- Desirable:
- Experience of/exposure to best practice development processes/lifecycles.
- Experience of/exposure to continuous integration and automated test tools and frameworks.
- Experience of DOORS and Enterprise Architect.
- Experience in Digital Electronics and Digital Logic Design.
- Experience in developing military equipment.
- Experience in developing UK High Grade Crypto products.
