This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.

The Role

The Office of the Chief Engineer (OCE) provides technical governance for the full lifecycle of all UKAEA’s engineering activities, providing the Engineering Authority is important to realising effective, safe technical outcomes. This role is based within the Safety Case Engineering Group under the Engineering Authority strand of the OCE. The Safety Case Engineering Group is responsible for the production of all of UKAEA’s Safety Cases and is pivotal in the assessment of high hazard operations with both radiological and non-radiological hazards.

Join our team and contribute to the advancement of fusion energy. As the Principal Safety Case Engineer, your responsibilities will include developing, offering and improving assessing modifications to Safety Cases across a number of facilities for both radiological and non-radiological hazards. Additionally, you will advise on strategies for the development of Safety Cases for both new and existing facilities, ensuring they are fit for purpose, timely in their submission, and in alignment with UKAEA’s program, while also ensuring regulatory compliance.

In this position, you will take proactive steps to influence, communicate, transfer knowledge, and coach the desired safety culture for UKAEA Safety Cases. You will also champion the integration of Safety Cases with technical changes, as well as benchmark and expand the Authority to stay abreast of emerging industry trends.

Additional Responsibilities

- Lead continual improvement to ensure UKAEA Safety Cases align with licenced sites and industry best practices
- Advise on identification, competency requirements, and appointment of safety-related roles
- Provide scrutiny and expert advice on Safety Case development and maintenance for UKAEA Facilities
- Represent UKAEA externally in impactful industrial forums, seeking contacts and influence to enhance Safety Case activities and organisational standing in the wider community

Qualifications
Essential Requirements

- Degree level in Science or Engineering (or equivalent experience).
- Extensive experience in producing Safety Cases, ideally for nuclear or other high hazard facilities.
- Trained in HAZAN, FMECA, and Safety Case Writing and/or Safety Case modifications.
- Proficient in relevant industry regulations, collaborating with Human Factors and Engineering Substantiation specialists.
- Skilled in performing Design Basis Analysis (DBA) and Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA).
