Job description

Product Designer

Who are you?

We are looking for a talented Product Designer to join our team. You will be fully involved in the product development process, from strategy to user research, ideation to delivery. Your focus will be deeply understanding the needs of our users and coming up with creative ways to meet them, whilst contributing to the growth of our business.

OK, that’s me, but who are DrDoctor?

Take a look at our careers page (https://drdoctor.teamtailor.com/) to find out a bit more about our mission, vision, and impact!

But ultimately, we the NHS and want to help it work better. We radically transform the delivery of health services to make healthcare work for everyone – for patients, doctors, administrative teams and taxpayers.

Tell me more! Who will I be working with?

In this role you really will interact with every part of the business, especially as we grow. Meet Joe, one of the Designers who you'd work with on a daily basis.

"Hi there I’m Joe. I’m a Senior Product Designer here at DrDoctor, and I’ve been here for around 6 years. 6 years is a long time for any designer to stay at a company! For me, I don’t think there’s a more interesting design challenge out there; how can we improve experiences and deliver value for people operating within a system that is financially and operationally handicapped?

It’s a fun mix here - we support and celebrate one another and care about our teammates’ well-being and growth. We enjoy our work but we always make time for having fun too. Be it socials, virtual or in-person get-togethers, like our quarterly All Hands. Growth-wise, my manager checks in with me regularly about my objectives and works closely with me to make sure I’m getting what I want out of my time here.

Our design team is small and mighty. If you’re someone who’s also excited by the above design challenge, is comfortable with ambiguity and likes tackling hard problems, we’d love for you to join us and make design at DrDoctor mightier.

Best of luck with your application!"

What would I be doing day to day?

One of the great things about a scale-up is that every day is different and there is always an opportunity to get involved in something outside of your ‘BAU’!

However, the key things you could expect would include:

  • You'll be talking to hospital staff and patients, as well as our or Transformation teams conducting research so you can make informed user-centered design decision
  • You’ll advocate for our users and put them at the heart of what you design.
  • You'll own the end-to-end design process, all the way from early discovery work through to designs and prototypes.
  • Working within a multi-disciplinary team to define, ship, and improve product features.
  • Developing our design system and ensuring that components are built in a flexible and reusable way.

OK, I’m interested. What experience do I need to have?

  • 4-5 years’ professional design experience within healthcare
  • Portfolio showcasing designing across the end-to-end process, from research, prototyping to delivery
  • Experience in planning and conducting user research
  • Experience in building and working with design systems
  • You know your design software (we’re using Figma)
  • You're a team player, low ego and encourage feedback
  • Experience within product experimentation and rapid optimisation
  • Any experience designing for communications products would be a real bonus

We know from research and experience that candidates may not apply if they don’t think they meet 100% of our requirements. If you don’t tick all the boxes but feel you would be a good fit, we would still love to hear from you. We are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive culture!
Just to let you know too, we will need you to have the Right To Work in the UK, and as we work closely with the NHS, if we get to the stage where we make you an offer to join us, we will also need to undertake a DBS check.

We are perfect for each other, what are the next steps?

We are currently recruiting heavily and have a lot of CVs to go through. However, we don’t wait for roles to close before going through your CV. We will be in touch in a few days to let you know if we think we might be a match, and if we are not. Unfortunately, because we get so many CV’s we are not able to send a personalised reply if it’s not a match. However, if you want more details as to why, just drop us a note and we will arrange to get some feedback over to you.

If it’s a match, then we will arrange a time to talk to you on a quick 30 minute call. It’s just an informal chat so you can relax! We will tell you more about the role, the team and why you should want to join us.

If we continue, then we will invite you to meet some of the team, most likely virtually. Some our roles will also be subject to completing an assessment or a role related exercise.

We get there are a lot of great roles out there, so we will make sure to get through the rounds as quickly as possible. All we ask is you keep us up to date with your plans.

I can’t wait to get started, what are the perks?

An awesome team and mission? Oh, you want more?

We keep all of our Perks and Benefits updated on our careers page https://drdoctor.teamtailor.com/ – we like to think there is something for everyone! We are remote first which means you can expect to work from home for the majority of the time, with the expectation that you'll travel in to the office on your first day for onboarding and every 6 weeks or so for company wide meetings. These dates will be planned well in advance. We are truly flexible in our approach here and appreciate the value of both remote working and face to face collaboration.

As DrDoctor has grown, we are seeing more of our people wanting to socialise in different ways.

Whilst we know that some of us love to go to the pub, we want to make sure we are including a wide variety of activities and events for our teams to enjoy each other's company, we aim to continue creating an open space for anyone and everyone to suggest how they’d like to spend time with their teams.

We love a Summer and Christmas party and regular company/team socials and away days. In the past year or so, we have enjoyed AI Games, Agile Games, Terrarium Making, Wreath Making to name a few. In 2023 we held various events for celebrations such as Holi Festival, International Women’s Day, Pancake Day and Pride celebrations and our 11th Birthday!

Salary banding for this role is: £45,000 - £60,000.
