The Hexcel Early Career Program is a highly coveted rotational program, designed to give participants the opportunity to gain valuable experience and receive wide exposure to the different Hexcel business functions. This exposure occurs through coordinated placements which provide unique and impactful experiences within the participants’ designated function. Participants may also get the opportunity to travel to different locations within Europe to gain insight into related functions in several Hexcel plants. This Product Development Scientist role will be based in Duxford, UK.

The Early Career Program will help participants gain the necessary skills and knowledge through comprehensive and holistic learning experiences, projects, training, networking, interaction with corporate executives, and ongoing exposure with customers. Program graduates have the technical, business, and leadership foundation to proactively and continuously make innovative contributions to the future of Hexcel in positions best suited to match their individual career goals.

Hexcel is currently seeking a Product Development Scientist for our Duxford, UK location.

The selected individual will be responsible for but not limited to the following obligations:
  • Lead/supervise, with the support of line manager, one or more product or technology development projects in line with Research & Technology strategy for resins for liquid composite moulding (LCM applications)
  • Ensure research and scale-up activities are conducted in a safe manner according to best practice and that all Environmental and transportation legislation is adhered to.
  • Record results through appropriate use of laboratory notebooks and computer storage and writing technical reports
  • Contribute directly to laboratory work, manage technician (direct or indirect reports) as required to achieve project goals.
  • File patents to secure Hexcel’s intellectual property and maintain patent portfolio
  • Keep up to date on external literature, such as academic papers and patents. May attend any relevant conferences or exhibitions.

Qualifications:
  • Self-starting scientist with materials science, polymer or resin chemistry background and demonstrable laboratory competency
  • Candidate is expected to join with expertise in polymeric or composite materials arising either from education through a degree at Masters or PhD level in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science or relevant experience in a similar role following a bachelor’s degree (minimum 2:1) in similar subjects.
  • Good practical skills with some knowledge of thermoset chemistry (e.g. epoxy, cyanate, bismaleimides, benzoxazine) and/or composites would be an advantage.
  • The ability to analyse test data and draw firm conclusions.
  • The ability to write accurate and concise technical reports. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Effective project management and communication skills, and be able to work independently or as a team member.
  • Strong team player and excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to command the personal respect and confidence of colleagues and customers for technical ability.
  • Displayed leadership potential
  • Must be willing and able to relocate, travel domestically and internationally.
