Job description

ScotBio specialises in the production of food ingredients from microalgae. We operate with a head office, laboratory and manufacturing facility in Livingston. Our aim is to supply solutions for foods and beverages which are healthy, nutritious and sustainable. The company has been actively developing technologies in this area for over 10 years and is currently commissioning a new manufacturing facility at its site in Livingston.

We are currently recruiting for Production Operators who are seeking a new challenge within food manufacturing. You will be joining an innovative and growing team, as we look to further develop and scale up our processes for industrial-scale production.

This is a full-time shift-based role reporting to members of the Production Management team. Successful candidates will be working as part of a small team to assist with the processing and maintenance of our live biological systems. This is a hands-on, dynamic and evolving role, supporting plant commissioning initially through to conducting upstream and downstream processing operations.

Key responsibilities will include those detailed below along with any other tasks linked to a successful manufacturing operation:

Support the new site development program including assembly and installation of new equipment.

  • Operate and maintain plant equipment to standard in line with Standard Operating Processes/Procedures (SOP’s).
  • Completion of routine checks, monitoring, measurements and recording of production data in line with SOP’s and Work Instructions.
  • Promote a safe working environment by ensuring that environmental and health & safety standards are maintained and adhered to by following defined company policies and work procedures.
  • Adhere to food safety and quality standards at all times, in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that the hygiene standards are maintained and adhered to by following defined company policies and procedures.
  • Work as part of a team and adhere to ScotBio’s values, policies and procedures.
  • Carry out tasks in relation to goods in, dispatch and stock control.

The Production Operators must be flexible to cover a wide range of functions such as preparation of nutrients for our live biological systems, chemical handling, operating machinery (including cleaning equipment), in line with site protocols. You will be working at a fast pace to meet tight deadlines. Manual handling is required. Full training will be provided for all aspects of the job.

This is a shift based role comprising of 4 days on/4 days off, 12 hour rotating shift pattern which also includes weekend working.

Skills & attributes

The ideal candidate will possess the following experience and personal attributes:

  • Experience within a fast-paced manufacturing or production environment.
  • Ability to precisely follow detailed work instructions, take direction, and maintain high standards of health and safety, hygiene, and housekeeping.
  • Team player who can work with initiative. You will be confident to work unsupervised but know when to ask for support or advice.
  • Basic software/data handling competency.
  • Hands-on and can-do attitude, with the ability to perform under pressure whilst working to deadlines.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve problems.
  • Attention to detail and willingness to learn.
  • Self-motivated with good communication skills.

The following qualifications and experience while desirable, are not essential:

  • HNC or above or a degree in a scientific or engineering discipline or demonstrable equivalent experience.
  • Background or qualifications in Health and Safety/Food Safety/Hygiene (for example HACCP awareness / IOSH etc.).
  • Experience working in and understanding of GMP work practices and techniques in accordance with regulatory requirements.
