Post Title: Programme Manager - The Missing Salmon Alliance
Type of appointment: Senior Programme Manager, Administration and Coordination
Start Date - Ideally starting from the 1st September 2024, initial fixed term contract for 3 years
Reporting to: Missing Salmon Alliance Management Board
Location: Home based - flexible in the UK
Hours: Part Time 22.5 hrs a week equivalent to a flexible three days a week
Salary: £47K pa Full Time Equivalent (FTE)
Benefits: Pension with 10% company contribution, 22 days FTE equivalent paid annual leave (plus all Bank Holidays) and private medical insurance.

Missing Salmon Alliance Programme Manager role overview

We are looking for a dynamic Programme Manager to lead the day-to-day coordination of the Missing Salmon Alliance, to assist the management board, to design and then deliver its operational plan based on the three pillars of its strategy - advocacy, communications, and cutting-edge research. The Programme Manager will assist with fund raising efforts by attending meetings and making sure actions to secure funding are carried out. This will include approaches to private donors, philanthropic and charitable trusts. The successful candidate will have experience of project management, strong diplomatic skills, experience in working across organisations within an alliance and managing across different organisational cultures, strong administrative and organisational skills.

This position will be hosted through the Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust and is funded by the Esmee Fairbairn Foundation.

The Missing Salmon Alliance

The Alliance brings together leading salmon conservation organisations in the UK to fight to reverse the devastating collapse in Wild Atlantic Salmon across the UK. By combining expertise, co-ordinating activities and advocating effective management solutions we can help Wild Atlantic Salmon survive and thrive in our rivers and seas for the next generation. Wild Atlantic Salmon are an important keystone indicator of a strong and healthy ecosystem, the factors that improve the population of salmon also benefit a far wider biodiverse ecosystem. We actively cooperate and collaborate with other organisations seeking to improve such ecosystems.

Our Strategy

Our strategy has been developed through the unique combination of cutting edge academic and empirical research, practical understanding of the challenging life-cycle of Wild Atlantic Salmon and the proven track record of the members of the Alliance in delivering hands on projects that improve the ecosystems on which Salmon depend.

The Strategy is based on three pillars:

  1. Advocating for healthy Wild Atlantic Salmon populations and communicating and celebrating the success of projects and interventions
  2. Communicating and engaging with individuals, businesses, NGOs and governments to support the work of the Alliance and its members and to raise awareness and understanding of the issues affecting Wild Atlantic Salmon; and
  3. Cutting edge research targeting the challenges facing Wild Atlantic Salmon through its life-cycle, informing the development of solutions through new projects, evidence and advocacy;

Programme Manager – Key Responsibility

  1. To be the main coordinator of the Alliance strategy and operational plans, to work with partners to ensure that work programs are delivered on schedule and to budget.
  2. To liaise closely with the CEOs and key staff of the MSA organisations
  3. To co-ordinate with partners the design of operational plans for the three pillars
  4. To oversee the delivery of the operational plans for the three pillars
  5. To support the delivery of the communications strategy, by liaising regularly with partners and the communications team
  6. To assist in the production of media material to promote the Alliance
  7. To lead the production of reports as and when necessary
  8. To assist the delivery of the advocacy strategy by working with the advocacy team
  9. To attend meetings and liaise with the science group and chair to assist the delivery of projects.
  10. To organise meetings and take minutes for the Alliance board meetings
  11. To assist in the preparation of, get approved, monitor for discrepancies, and manage Alliance budgets
  12. To assist the fundraising efforts by attending meetings and ensuring that all follow up from the meetings are delivered.
  13. Where charitable and philanthropic organisations have been identified for specific funding opportunities to prepare and submit funding applications as agreed with the funding team.
  14. To help co-ordinate and provide information in the form of budget and information for fundraising to the fundraising team
  15. To assist partners with funding applications for project work
  16. To attend key meetings and conferences to promote the work of the Alliance
  17. Assist in the organising of Alliance events

Selection Criteria - Essential

  1. Extensive experience of project management and working in multi organisational environment
  2. Strong project management skills
  3. Experience of working within the UK environmental NGO sector
  4. Proven skills for managing budgets and writing reports
  5. Track record of fundraising through different sectors
  6. Excellent communications and networking skills at senior and CEO levels
  7. UK Driving licence

Selection criteria – Beneficial

  1. Experience within the freshwater and or marine ecology and NGO sectors
  2. Experience of working within the salmon conservation sector
