The Council has invested in its in-house legal team to support the delivery of the Council’s priorities and the new structure supports the team in the delivery of legal services across the Council. This is an exciting time to join us and help us to build, establish and develop the new team.   

Our in-house legal team advises a wide range of the Council’s departments, from contracts and procurement, planning, licensing and regulatory to major projects.  The team aim to provide high quality, clear and pragmatic advice to professional officers.   

These posts are a fantastic opportunity to join an exciting new team as a Lawyer.   We are looking for applicants who have a strong background in providing legal advice to variety of clients, and hold a relevant degree (qualified CILEX, Solicitor or Barrister, licensed to practice).  You will have experience of providing advice on complex legal work matters to Members, Officers and other stakeholders. 

You will be required to ensure that the implications of local government law are understood and complied with, including the statutory requirement within the Council.  You will support the Senior Lawyers with drafting and advising on reports for Cabinet, Council Committees and other meetings as required ensuring that all procedural and standing order requirements are complied with, and to attend meetings as required, which may include meetings outside of usual office hours and in evenings. 

In both of these roles you will be expected to display sound decision making skills, including remarkable interpersonal, excellent verbal, influencing, and written communication, be confident in public speaking, and problem solving.  Also be an self-motivated individual with commitment to achieving targets, well organised professional and handle a broad caseload including general and property matters.   
JOB PURPOSE:

  • To deliver good quality legal advice to client departments, ensuring they are aware of, and comply with, statutory requirements and the Council’s activities are conducted in a lawful and transparent matter.
  • To contribute to the day-to-day delivery of the Legal Service and to embed a culture of continuous improvement in service quality, cost efficiency and customer responsiveness.
  • To support the Senior Lawyers in the delivery of a high quality and effective services.
  • To fully engage as part of the wider team to ensure both service and cross service objectives are achieved. This will involve matrix working, ‘task to finish’ operations and overall effective marshalling of resources across the authority to enable a forward looking, responsive and innovative culture delivering sustainable and high-quality services.
  • To contribute to the teams service plans and team plans are completed.

As we are requiring two Lawyers the requirement is for one to to work in the two different specialised areas covering (Generalist and or Property).  This is detailed in the two different person specifications  and you will need to ensure you meet these requirements and hold experience in working in these areas.  Please specify which post you are applying for on your application form and ensure your application clearly demonstrates how you meet the person specification.
