Job description

Property Librarian - Norwich
Summary

Are you interested in working with a Library of National importance? Do you have a proven track record of working with historic library collections, cataloguing items to allow us to carry out research, presentation and interpretation? If so, we'd love to hear from you.

What it's like to work here

Blickling is a thriving, integrated estate. We have been a home for people and nature for thousands of years. Over 400 years ago the current hall was built, becoming the heart of a local community that cared for Blickling’s people, cultural and natural treasures.

The hall contains one of England’s most notable country house libraries: containing over 12,500 volumes, it is the most significant collection of early books cared for by the National Trust.

Most of the volumes, now housed in the spectacular Long Gallery, were originally owned by Sir Richard Ellys, a prominent theologian and antiquarian. His library was transferred from London to Blickling in the early 1740s.

The Ellys collection is a magnificent accumulation of religious, scientific and historical texts in important early bindings and with provenance from across the world. It was a collection made for use, not ornamentation – your job is to ensure that it continues to be used in the 21st century.

What you'll be doing

You’ll champion the library collections and catalogue them to enable research, interpretation and programming. Working alongside the property and central Libraries Team you’ll enable the collection to reach existing and new audiences. You’ll work with conservation experts and hardworking volunteers to survey book conditions.

You’ll be part of Blickling’s Collections and House team contributing to the Treasure House programme, which celebrates the significant collections cared for on property. You’ll collaborate with local and national partners to develop new ways of working with the library.
