About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth, and environmental sciences.

About the Role

We now have an opportunity for a Public Engagement Manager to oversee and ensure delivery of Diamond's Public Engagement program. They will develop Public Engagement strategies and ensure an effective schools and public program for Diamond. They will also need to train and support Diamond staff in delivery of projects and to work with internal and external partners to maximise the impact and effectiveness of our engagement activities.

Experience of engagement work is essential, ideally within a STEM setting. A knowledge of event planning and working with volunteers would be an advantage.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Create and update strategies and plans for Public Engagement, in line with best practice in the field of science communication and the wider communications strategy and vision for Diamond.
  • Proactively undertake resourcing, content planning and delivery for educational outreach and Public Engagement activities.
  • Work with the Head of Communications, initiate new projects proposals, agree budgets and timetables for them and identify partners or apply for sources of funding where appropriate (i.e. grants etc).
  • Manage the delivery and budgeting of engagement activities, managing internal and external staff to ensure effective delivery against strategic and operational objectives.
  • Develop and manage the delivery of education activities in line with curriculum and with input from teachers and other stakeholders.
  • Management of staff working in engagement, including freelance and casual workers where appropriate.
  • Leading on the development and enhancement of materials for use in corporate and technical presentations.
  • Manage and deliver/contract the training portfolio for Diamond staff, users and students in communication and engagement.

About You

Ideally you will have an Advanced Degree in science communications or a degree in social sciences, science, communications or similar or relevant/equivalent work experience and demonstrate the following:

  • Demonstrable and proven experience of working in a successful busy communications or Public Engagement group.
  • Experience of managing the operational delivery of complex Public Engagement, education and/or communications projects.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work as a team and build strong working relationships at all levels (internally and externally).
  • Experience of using and designing campaigns with digital tools which are key to dissemination and engagement (social media, community platforms etc.).
  • Excellence IT skills and competent in the use digital communications tools.
