thebigword is a leading government supplier, providing interpreting and translation services across NHS, Local Authorities, and Central Government. Our mission is to make the world a smaller place by breaking down language barriers and helping people access services in their own language. thebigword is seeking an experienced Public SectorProposal Writer to join its team. This role reports to Interpreting division, whilst directly linking to one or more of our three divisions. These divisions are:
HR Shared Services: This team operates as a centre of excellence, delivering efficient transactional and policy support to the business globally. HR support in Shared Business Services includes the following teams; Group IT, CEO office, Marketing and Finance.
Interpreting Division: This team helps supply global interpreting (spoken) services to our clients by making over 10,000 face-to-face bookings and 140,000 telephone interpreting calls every month! We use some of the best-in-class technology which automates up to 70% of all our face-to-face bookings and ensures our clients are connected to an Interpreter through telephone interpreting in under 60 seconds!
Translation Division: This team manages our clients’ written communication whether it be books, websites or the schematics for a nuclear submarine! We link our clients to our team of professional linguists and specialists, providing over 250 language combinations to meet our clients’ demands.
As a Proposal Writer, you’ll be an integral part of our team, reporting directly to the SVP – New Business Development. Collaborating with our Sales team, you’ll lead the creation of compelling, winning proposals that captivate our clients and drive our business forward.
Your role will involve crafting persuasive narratives and translating complex technical information into clear, concise, and impactful content. You’ll delve into the heart of our offerings, understanding our solutions inside out, and articulating their value propositions to meet the unique needs of our clients.
This isn’t just about writing; it’s about strategy. You’ll analyse bid requirements, think strategically and craft tailored responses that resonate with our clients, positioning us as the preferred choice in competitive markets.

Key Responsibilities
As a Proposal Writer you will:
• Lead the development, writing, and submission of Public Sector tenders focusing primarily on opportunities within the NHS, Local Authorities, and Central Government.
• Engage with subject matter experts, team members, and stakeholders to gather and consolidate the required information.
• Ensure all proposals adhere to tender requirements, quality standards, and align with our company’s offerings and values.
• Work collaboratively with the larger bid, sales, marketing, and technical teams to develop competitive proposals.
• Continuously update and maintain a knowledge base of industry trends, Public Sector procurement processes, and best practices.
• Maintain an up-to-date bid library, ensuring content is current, relevant, and easily accessible.
• Attend client debriefing and feedback sessions post-submission, to understand the strengths and areas for improvement in our proposals.
• Provide insights on proposal strategies, competitive analysis, and win themes.
• Participate in proposal reviews, proofreading, and final production.
• Track and report on proposal outcomes, making recommendations for future improvements.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
What we are looking for:
• Extensive experience in writing Public Sector tenders.
• Experience working in or writing language service industry tenders would be a bonus
• Proven track record of winning Public Sector contracts.
• Strong academic background (degree level) in English Language or equivalent is desirable.
• Creative Writing Qualification.
• APMP Foundation (Practitioner or Professional level desirable).
• Outstanding writing, editing, and communication skills.
• Familiarity with the UK Public Sector procurement processes.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and any relevant proposal writing software.
