Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.
Overview of project/role
Places for London, Transport for London’s Property Development (PD) team is tasked with developing TfL’s land across the city, from housing and mixed use to commercial and town centre developments.
We are currently recruiting for the exciting role of Design and Quality Manager.
You’ll sit within the Planning & Design team supporting Places for London PD and Asset Management (AM) on design and sustainability matters and ensure that PD’s Sustainable Development Framework (SDF), Design Principles and the GLAs Good Growth by Design pillars are embedded on a range of projects.
You’ll be a PD champion on sustainability and Design excellence and support Residential, Build to Rent, Commercial and Major Project delivery teams within PD and AM on a variety of sites.
Key Accountabilities
- Ensuring that Property Development's Sustainable Development Framework (SDF), Design Principles, the GLA's pillars of Good Growth by Design and other briefing documents are followed and embedded in relevant projects;
- Working with project design teams and development partners to ensure that key sustainability, design and quality objectives for each scheme are achieved and that design teams are challenged to innovate and improve on these objectives;
- Working with Places for London Development Managers and Planners to agree the key sustainability, Quality and Design objectives for each scheme, including site specific design principles;
- Contributing to capacity and skills building programme for Development Managers focused on urban design, sustainability, design processes, procurement and construction (e.g. building visits, talks, workshops etc.)
- Arranging design reviews with Mayoral Design Advocates (MDAs), including scheduling, design team briefing, presentation preparation and liaison with MDAs;
- Inputting into the development of sustainability and Design quality management strategies, project level objectives and innovative initiatives that demonstrate high quality design, sustainability and place-making across TfL’s portfolio;
- Liaising with other TfL teams including across Places for London and Spatial Planning to connect relevant sustainability, design and urban design expertise.
- Managing SDF Analysts in the production of SDF scorecards and reporting for PD projects.
- Regularly reviewing SDF standards to ensure they remain up to date with industry good and leading practice.

- Excellent organisational and planning skills
- Excellent communication and ability to explain and promote sustainability and Design in an easily digestible and tangible way
Knowledge
- Qualified Architect with proven experience of embedding high standards of sustainability in projects
- Good understanding of national, GLA and London borough planning and environmental policies
- Good understanding of environmental measurement tools e.g. BREEAM, HQM, Passivhaus, WELL, LEED
Experience
- Experience of working with a variety of stakeholders to achieve a purpose
- Excellent written and presentation skills and experience of producing reports and outputs to meet business objectives
- Proven ability to interpret and use different information sources and communicate them to decision makers effectively.
- Ability to work under tight time constraints in an environment of high expectations and pressure.
