Job Title : Quality (Warranty) Technician

Salary: £17.47 p/h

Location : Shrewsbury

Benefits: 

·       21 days annual leave, plus Bank Holidays.

·       Single shift, 4 day working week, Monday to Thursday.

·       4% bonus.

·       Contributory pension scheme- Caterpillar will double the employee's contribution up to 10%.

·       Contributory share scheme- Caterpillar will match 50% of the employee's contribution.

The Opportunity

Caterpillar Shrewsbury are responsible for the design, development, and integration of engine and drivetrain packages to meet the needs of tracked and wheeled products globally. The facility also provides remanufacturing services of industrial engines, components, and transmissions.

An opportunity has arisen for a Quality Technician to support customer quality concerns. The role involves direct Customer interface and offering support for in-service product failures. This position reports to the Warranty Quality Systems Engineer.

This is a challenging role and represents an exciting opportunity working as part of a highly focused team to deliver solutions.

Job Responsibilities and Duties :

Working with support functions to coordinate the registration of concerns, support and carrying out field repairs or return of product to Caterpillar Shrewsbury, and subsequent engine and component investigation including facilitating Customer visits. Facilitating root cause analysis of failures and feedback to meet Customer contractual obligations. Writing of failure analysis reports and supporting product and process improvements using structured problem-solving methodologies to resolve technical problems.

The above will include the following activities and role specific responsibilities:

  • Coordinate or provide direct support for product field failures.

  • Technically support and liaise with Quality and Manufacturing Engineers.

  • Raise Customer concerns in relevant Shrewsbury database/s. • Lead planning & execution of joint investigations with Customers (Military & Commercial).

  • Collate information from failure data (reports, warranty systems etc). • Undertake product strip and analysis to establish failure modes and record evidence.

  • Interpret evidence to organise and identify where further specialist analysis is required.

  • Drive root cause & corrective action activity for completion of 8D.

  • Populate 8D template, Customer Complaint, and Voice of the Customer reports.

  • Link with Shrewsbury support functions to facilitate investigation and corrective actions.

  • Use information obtained to compile and issue Customer outcome reports. • Communicate and liaise with Customers & Suppliers.

  • Support key warranty and customer deadlines and maintain velocity to meet deadlines.

  • Support warranty cost recovery and quality concern reduction to reduce COPQ.

  • Develop positive working partnership across Customer base.

  • Customer liaison for Military and Commercial quality issues.

Key Skills and Attributes :

Candidates will have gained the following skills and experience:

  • Work using own initiative; motivated, autonomous, organised and systematic.

  • Knowledge of Military and Rail Commercial products and applications.

  • Knowledge of internal combustion engines and operating systems.

  • Ability to compile and write technical reports.

  • Ability to plan, organise, and prioritise a varied range of work.

  • Problem solving in Engine testing.

  • Experience of building positive Customer relations.

  • Ability to influence reduction of Warranty spend.

  • Ability to read and interpret Engineering drawings and Service literature.

  • Competent in communicating with Engineers, Operational personnel, Suppliers and Customers.

  • Engineering apprenticeship with underpinning knowledge, or HNC in either Electrical or Mechanical engineering discipline/relevant working experience

  • Understanding of quality systems and non-conformance management.

  • Computer literate (MS Office, QAD EE, Compliant pro, internet applications).

  • Health & safety and environmentally aware; safe use of tools and lifting equipment.

  • Excellent team player.

Candidates may have gained the following skills and experience :

  • Able to operate a fork-lift truck (desirable).

  • Trained in 6 Sigma (Green Belt desirable).
