Job description

Your New Organisation:
Southend-on-Sea City Council is a Unitary local authority, providing vital services to meet the needs of the local community. We employ around 1,800 staff who are working alongside our partners and local communities to deliver the Southend 2050 ambition and make lives better for the people of Southend. Southend itself is a vibrant place to live and work, offering coastal living alongside excellent and fast transport links into London.

Working for Southend-on-Sea City Council offers a challenging and rewarding career in local government within a collaborative and innovative environment. As a Unitary Authority we are responsible for all local government functions ranging from regulatory services, transport, public health, and parks through to planning, social services, community safety and education, so we offer a wide range of career opportunities. The diversity of our economy and communities and investment in a number of exciting regeneration projects makes our Council a great place to work, learn and make a difference.
Your new role:
We are looking for a Collections and Exhibition Assistant to join the Southend Museums team on a full time and fixed term contract basis (12 months). This contract is within an established team and is being offered on a hybrid work pattern (but will be mainly based onsite).

As a Collections and Exhibition Assistant, you will assist the curatorial team and Collections and Conservation Manager in all collections management and exhibition tasks. You will play a vital role in the installation and de-installation of all exhibitions and displays, and you will also assist the curatorial team on documentation and collection cataloguing tasks. You will regularly check the Environmental Monitoring system and ensure that the annual IPM programme is maintained.

You will undertake regular store checks to ensure all equipment and storage environmental control systems are working, and collections are safe. You will assist with exhibition preparation tasks such as checking and preparation of objects in liaison with the Collections and Conservation Manager and the curatorial team. You will prepare mounts for objects, assist with location updating tasks and undertake any other relevant duties as necessary.
What you'll need to succeed:
To be successful in this role, previous experience of working/volunteering within a museum/gallery or heritage organisation is essential. Experience of object handling, packaging, documentation, installation and mounting for display is vital to be successful in this role. It is essential that you have up to date knowledge of current collections care practices within museums and galleries.

It is also essential that you have good knowledge and ideally some experience of hanging historic and contemporary art. It is essential that you can communicate effectively across all levels and be able to work to deadlines, carrying out your duties accurately at speed, establishing good relationships with customers and other stakeholders.

A degree in Conservation, Collections
Care, Museum Studies or Technical Conservation qualification will be highly desirable.
What you'll get in return:
If you join the Council, you will enjoy a range of benefits including flexible working, salary sacrifice schemes, 25 days holiday in a full-time contract (excluding bank holidays) and excellent training and development opportunities.
