AWE have a unique opportunity for someone with a technical mindset to join our Arms Control Verification Research area as a Radiation Scientist, being part of a team ensuring AWE is “future treaty ready”.

Location: Aldermaston, Barkshire. We are located between Reading and Basingstoke, with onsite parking.
Candidates need to be able to work for at least 50% of the working week on site at AWE Aldermaston.
Package: £38,000 - £44,000 ( depending on your suitability, qualifications, and level of experience)

This Radiation Scientist role will lead and participate in tasks to develop treaty verification technologies. Supporting the Nuclear Treaty Verification programme within the Systems Assessments Group, our multi-discipline team provides advice to government on arms control issues, looking at how States control, account for and verify nuclear weapons .
Within this role, you will have the opportunity to travel overseas to the US and Europe, and to interact with international communities.
We are keen to hear from those who have a degree in a STEM subject (or equivalent experience) coupled with at least a years’ experience in a relevant technical role. Due to the technical breadth of work, full support and training will be provided to develop knowledge and skills in the role.
Some of the responsibilities of this role include:

  • Radiation transport modelling
  • Taking measurements and analysing these measurements to feed back to stakeholders
  • Working in collaboration with partner laboratories
  • Analysing problems using Systems Thinking methodology to assess specific scenarios
  • Planning, development, and validation of software codes, where appropriate.
  • Contribute to interactions with international partners and external stakeholders in their field.

We are ideally looking for a Physics, Engineering or STEM candidate to have one or more of the following:
  • Experience in Radiation Detection/Nuclear Materials Accountancy or a Nuclear Industry background
  • Understanding of nuclear facilities; processes; and inventory items
  • Systems thinking mindset
  • Computational modelling or experience in scientific programming using languages such as Fortran, Python or C++
  • Understanding of treaty verification systems and equipment/techniques
  • An interest in Geopolitics, Global Affairs and/or International Relations.

Important things you need to know:
  • Interviews will be 90 minutes in length and will be held over Microsoft Teams. You will be required to prepare a 10-minute presentation in advance.
  • Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role. This will be funded by AWE.
