We have an exciting new opportunity to train with the Peak District National Park, could you be a Ranger Trainee?
This 12 month traineeship will sit in our Volunteering and Communities team, but will work collaboratively across other teams in our Landscape and Engagement service. The Volunteering and Communities team deliver right across the national park working with communities locally and regionally on a range of programmes.
This role is linked to our Peak Park Conservation Volunteer programme. This programme works with volunteers, community groups, schools and corporate groups to undertake practical conservation tasks that help restore, conserve and enhance the Peak District National Park. Working alongside staff and experienced volunteers this role will support the practical delivery of conservation tasks across the National Park.
The role will be managed by our Wellbeing and Communities Ranger.
About you
This is a role to help you start a career in the outdoor sector. You should be interested in supporting people to access wellbeing benefits of the outdoors, learn practical conservation skills and building your career in the outdoor / environment sector.

The ideal candidate will have;
• Interest in building your career in the outdoors / environment sector - especially in roles that engage people and involve practical conservation.
• Some experience and a keen interest in engaging and working with people, for instance through the youth, community, social care, health and wellbeing or sports sectors – whether gained through volunteering or work.
• Experience of using tools (saw’s, hammers, loppers, digging equipment etc.) especially in an outdoor setting.
• Excellent communications and inter-personal skills, with the ability to connect with a wide range of people.
• Enthusiasm about making sure that our National Parks and outdoor spaces are for everyone.
• Good time management skills, ability to prioritise and work under own initiative.
• Willingness to work outdoors in a range of weather conditions.
• Must have a driving licence and be willing to drive to locations around the National Park.
Job description
Your key role is to support in the planning and delivery of conservation tasks working with and leading teams of volunteers. You will be supported by the Wellbeing and Communities Rangers, and work closely with other rangers and teams within the National Park Authority.
During the traineeship you will;
• Learn how to plan and run successful conservation and gardening based activities such as, dry stone walling, tree planting, fencing, pond restoration.
• Support delivery of activities for people from a wide range of backgrounds and ages etc. to visit and enjoy the National Park
• Undertake work projects related to your area of interest
• Contribute to our overall monitoring and evaluation
• Have the opportunity to work shadow other teams in the National Park,
• Meet regularly with your manager to review your personal development plan
Training you will receive:
There is some flexibility in this area depending on your career aspirations and the needs of the role.
There will be some standard elements, which will include;
• Outdoor First Aid (2-day)
• Safeguarding
• Health and safety (IOSH Working Safely or equivalent)
• Mental Health First Aid
• Internal training on policies and practice using the National Parks ELMs online learning platform
