Vacancy: R&D Operations Transformation Lead
Location: Teesside, UK

As the R&D Operations Transformation Lead you will support innovation that underpins future growth in the Catalyst Technologies business by driving transformation in R&D operational activities. As part of the Research Engineering Solutions leadership team, the role holder will be responsible for developing an R&D Operations Transformation roadmap and executing delivery through leadership of a multi-disciplined technical team. With a multi-year planning horizon, the role holder will identify and implement transformation programmes that build operational resilience and embed state of the art capabilities, to position the Johnson Matthey Teesside site as a flagship innovation facility of the future.

Your responsibilities:
  • Leads and owns the development of an R&D Operations Transformation roadmap for the Catalyst Technologies business in Teesside, aligned to R&D capability needs to deliver business goals.
  • Identify skills and capabilities for delivery of an R&D transformation plan, with definition and implementation of an appropriate multi-year strategy for resource through internal development, recruitment or external partnerships.
  • In alignment with JM corporate programmes, facilitate delivery of projects to embed state of the art capability in laboratory digitalisation and automation, to enable CT R&D to leverage the power of data and robotics to maximise productivity and return on R&D investment.
  • Develop R&D site footprint strategy to inform multi-year capital investment programme on Teesside, covering aspects of R&D operations resilience and scaling up for future growth.
  • Support the development of the overall Teesside site strategic growth plan, ensuring new and existing site infrastructure and operating models are wholly aligned to the R&D transformation plan.
  • Facilitate ever improving EHS performance across the organisation through close partnership with process safety, engineering assurance and IT cyber security groups in the delivery of R&D Operations Transformation programmes.
Requirements for the role:
  • Relevant Scientific or Engineering Degree with a strong learning agility
  • Understanding of R&D operational environment, comprising multi-scale activities from micro to pilot scale in both catalyst synthesis and process technology development
  • An established technical leader with experience in leading complex programmes
  • Experience managing a portfolio of programmes/projects which have interdependencies
  • Thinking agility and capability to put technical concepts together in new ways to maximise opportunities for R&D efficiency
  • Experience leading and influencing across multi-disciplined teams and a proven ability to simplify processes that enable operations
