Reading Specialist
Annual Salary: £27,930 - £33,691
Location: Haverigg, Millom
Job Type: Part-time, Permanent (18.5 hours per week)
We are seeking a dedicated Reading Specialist Tutor to join our team within the Offender Learning Sector. This part-time role offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on individuals’ lives by enhancing their English literacy skills in a prison education setting, thereby supporting their future employment prospects upon release.
Day-to-day of the role:
- Mentor learners to develop their English reading and writing skills within a secure environment.
- Deliver focused and supportive education in small class sizes.
- Collaborate with a dedicated team of professionals, Student Support Workers, and prisoner peer mentors.
- Employ a variety of teaching methods to cater to different learning styles and needs.
- Motivate and inspire learners to realise their potential in English literacy.
- Maintain a patient, passionate, and understanding approach to teaching, recognising the diverse backgrounds of learners.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- A degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area.
- GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
- A teaching qualification such as PGCE or Cert Ed is desirable, but not essential.
- Experience in teaching or tutoring English with a focus on functional skills is advantageous.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively within a secure and sometimes challenging environment.
