Would you like to work on cutting edge research that is making a real difference in the prevention and early diagnosis of cancer?

An opportunity has arisen for a Research Assistant /Junior Epidemiologist to support the research activities of Professor Amanda Cross and the Cancer Screening and Prevention Research Group (CSPRG, www.csprg.org.uk) based at the St Mary’s Campus of Imperial College London, located in Paddington.

You will be working within an internationally renowned multidisciplinary group undertaking research into the prevention and early detection of gastrointestinal (oesophageal, stomach and colorectal) cancers, some of the biggest cancer killers in the developing and developed world.

Joining a friendly, highly motivated team, you will be involved in several research projects funded by the UK Government and charities, including Cancer Research UK. Under the supervision of Professor Cross and Dr Gwen Murphy, and working closely with other members of the team, you will be involved in designing and analysing clinical and epidemiological studies, and you will assist with the preparation of these studies for publication. You will be expected to become familiar with all research currently being undertaken by the CSPRG, and you will take a broader interest in the field of gastrointestinal cancer as a whole.

We are seeking a motivated professional with a background in epidemiology. You will be educated to BSc degree level or equivalent, in a science or health related subject and hold a relevant Master’s degree. In addition, you should have previous experience in epidemiology, proven research skills and experience in the analysis and reporting of research datasets.

 

Duties and responsibilities


  • Contribute to the epidemiological work required for the successful completion of new and existing studies in the CSPRG portfolio.

  • Undertake literature reviews for initiating new projects and for interpretation of results of studies from the group. 

  • Record and analyse data and communicate the results at scientific meetings and through publications in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Assist with the planning, design and conduct of new research projects.

  • Contribute to the preparation of study reports and grant applications.

  • Participate in seminars and work-in-progress meetings within the Department.

  • Attend relevant workshops and conferences as necessary.

  • Ensure the validity, accuracy and reliability of data at all times.

  • Provide advice to other staff and students.

  • Develop contacts within the College and the wider community.

  • Promote the reputation of the Group, the Department and the College.

Essential requirements


  • Hold a PHD or equivalent (Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant)

  • MPH or MSc specialising in Epidemiology or a related discipline, or equivalent qualification and research experience.

  • An understanding of epidemiological and statistical concepts and techniques that apply to a wide range of study designs.

  • Experience of using statistical software packages.

  • Appropriate knowledge of epidemiological principles and methods.

  • Demonstrable research skills and experience in epidemiology.

  • Ability to contribute to discussions about epidemiological issues.

  • Ability to review epidemiological literature.

  • Excellent English written and oral communication skills.

  • The ideal candidate would have skills, or be keen to develop skills, in querying large databases and in applying appropriate statistical techniques to extract and analyse health data.

  • Ability to contribute to data analysis and interpretation.

Further information

This a post is full time and fixed term until 30th of June 2025 in the first instance.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as a Research Assistant within the salary range £40,694 - £43,888 per annum.

Hybrid working may be considered for this role. Staff working in roles that are suitable for hybrid working will normally be expected to work 60% of their time onsite. The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
