A position exists for a Research Assistant/Associate in the Department of Engineering, to work on Low Cost digital automation solutions in industrial contexts. The post holder will work with the Distributed Information and Automation Laboratory (led by Prof. Duncan McFarlane).The post holder will be located in West Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK. The key responsibilities and duties are developing industry and lab-based demonstrators providing digital automation solutions; testing and experimenting with solutions to assess their effectiveness and impact on connected manufacturing systems and people; and generating and supporting research publications, presentations, reports and funding proposals. The skills, qualifications and experience required to perform the role are to have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in Manufacturing or Industrial Engineering, Engineering, Computer Science or related subjects; experience in planning and development of digital automation or augmentation systems; experience in publishing research in peer-reviewed, international outlets; and experience in the use of Low Cost Sensing, communication and computing devices. Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will be appointed at Research Assistant level, which will be amended to Research Associate once the PhD has been awarded. Salary Ranges: Research Assistant: £29,605 - £33,966; Research Associate: £36,024 - £44,263 Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31 March 2025 in the first instance.
