About the role As part of the recently funded European Media and Immersion Lab (EMIL), the Department of Computer Science at the University of Bath are looking for a highly motivated individual to do research in the area of Immersive Technology (especially VR and AR). This is a part-time (0.8 FTE), fixed-term role until February 2025. The project aims to investigate novel immersive systems, focusing on systems that involve physical activity such as VR exercise games (“exergames”), and explore their effects on users. This role involves supporting projects related to Immersive Technology through project coordination, project planning, data collection, data analysis, write-up of publications, outreach and wider dissemination as well as other impact activities. In particular, the role will include the following activities: Evaluating VR/AR systems. This includes developing a methodology for empirical studies, such as experimental design, tasks and set up, the use of sensors to collect physiological data, participant recruitment, data collection with participants and data analysis. Some experience with running user studies is essential. Experience with data analysis such as statistical testing is desirable. Leadership. This includes proactively driving projects forward by communicating with everyone involved, coordinating between different research group members and stakeholders, co-supervising research students, proactive engagement with end-users, representing the research group at events, and research group organisation tasks. Publication. This includes researching and summarising related work, describing the design of novel VR/AR systems and their evaluation, and critical analysis of contributions in the light of the existing literature. It also includes presentation of the work at conferences and in demonstrations. The position will form part of a team of researchers, dedicated to creating the next generation of VR/AR experiences. As well as working within the team, you will collaborate with a number of industrial and academic partners to ensure that the solutions developed are relevant and that they will be adopted in the real-world. About you The ideal candidate should have: Experience in planning and running studies involving Immersive Technology such as VR. Experience in running studies related to physical exercise, and ideally physical exercise in the context of VR. Experience in writing up publications, ideally publications involving Immersive Technology. Experience in working with stakeholders such as potential end-users. Experience in working on research impact such as commercialisation, ideally involving Immersive Technology.
