Job description

Department & Project

The School of Arts and Creative Technologies (ACT) brings contemporary, dynamic and creative disciplines together to inspire new areas for teaching, learning and research in the areas of music, theatre, film, television, interactive media and in the business of creative industries.

In collaboration with the Computer Science department, we are looking for two Research Fellows to join an exciting translational R&D project at the intersection of AI, Computer Vision and Virtual Production for Film and TV. This project will leverage the latest advances in Computer Vision AI and Generative AI alongside green-screen virtual study technology to achieve real-time light interactions between physical and virtual worlds.

The successful candidates will be joining a project team of world-leading academics in AI vision research, industry experts and innovative content creators to carry research of new AI-powered technologies for real-time virtual production. Alongside conducting technical research, the candidate will also participate in regular experimentation within the project’s cutting-edge virtual production and motion capture R&D studio located at dock10, the UK’s leading TV facilities operator.

Role

The Research Fellows will be leading the research of novel Machine Learning and Computer Vision algorithms, including the design and training of novel AI models, implementation of working technical prototypes and evaluation of new AI technologies within an applied creative environment. Successful candidates will also contribute to the management and delivery of the project, including supervising research students, providing expert advice to industry stakeholders, and informing the development of commercial applications.

We encourage both established postdoctoral researchers and recent PhD graduates with an exceptional track record in Computer Vision and Machine Learning to apply. Flexible working conditions, including some degree of remote work can be considered.

There are two positions for this role available, one situated at School of Arts and Creative Technologies, and one in Computer Science (the positions otherwise share the same criteria and will work closely together).

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • First degree in Computer Science or related area
  • PhD in Computer Vision, Machine Learning or Computer Graphics or equivalent experience
  • Knowledge in deep learning for vision or graphics to engage in high quality research
  • Advanced and specialist IT knowledge, including setting up and using managed GPU server resources and AI model training pipelines
  • Experience of undertaking publicly evidenced high quality research
  • Ability to lead and/or take responsibility for a small research project or identified parts of a large project

Interview date: To be confirmed
