Job description

Cyclones, both tropical (TCs) and extra-tropical (ETCs) are global weather phenomena, associated with intense winds, extreme precipitation, and often surge in coastal regions. They are frequently devastating to society, both from economic and loss-of-life perspectives. Responding and preparing for these events effectively is a challenge further exacerbated by the effects of climate change. We are seeking a researcher to work with us on an INNOVATE UK funded project led by MAXINFO, a catastrophe modelling analytics company, which also includes AON UK Limited, and London School of Economics. The position here at Reading will focus on the extraction and manipulation of historical and real-time forecast data to develop a new open and globally continuous set of cyclone hazard analytics for incorporation into a new Hazard Impact Tracker. The Hazard Impact tracker will help to increase societal resilience to disasters by supporting robust and efficient risk financing and anticipatory action work across multiple sectors: humanitarian (fewer lives lost), infrastructure (lower reconstruction costs post-event) and finance (effective risk transfer in insurance and reinsurance industries). You will have : A PhD in atmospheric science or a closely related subject (e.g. physics, mathematics). Strong scientific analytical and computing skills and experience in analysing, manipulating, and visualising large scientific datasets. Effective communication skills, both verbal and written. Interviews will be held: 22/04/2024.
