Job description

Bangor University are seeking a highly motivated person who is passionate about the development of rugby for students, staff and the local community.

This person will be responsible for the Rugby Performance Programme which includes coaching the University teams as well as managing a wider portfolio of rugby activity with key University stakeholders.

This is a permanent, full-time role and will be responsible to the Sports Development Manager. The successful candidate will be qualified to WRU Level 2 (or equivalent) with experience of leading and managing a rugby team.

The successful candidate must be able to communicate through the medium of Welsh or be committed to learn to a specified level within 2 years. The successful candidate will be expected to commence as soon as reasonably possible, and the post is subject to a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check.

Purpose of the Job

To engage, enhance and develop rugby opportunities and rugby related research within and beyond the University. To provide coaching, education and club development support for performance and participation.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

    Develop and deliver the Rugby Performance Programme for men and women in partnership with Rygbi Gogledd Cymru (RGC).
    Develop the University rugby programme for men and women at participation level.
    Coach both men and women’s BUCS rugby teams.
    Act as the University liaison with Rygbi Gogledd Cymru (RGC) for player recruitment.
    Supporting University research activity, for example through the recruitment of elite athlete subjects.
    Facilitating work placement/experience opportunities for University students with RGC.
    Recruitment of new players at performance and participation level.
    Coordinate the delivery of relevant coaching courses to University students enrolled on University sport coaching modules.
    Delivery of rugby for juniors at kids camps and other junior initiatives.
    Organise rugby festivals and utilize University facilities.
    Contribute to the effective marketing and promotion of sport facilities, programmes and services.
    Attend local, regional and national programme development meetings.
    Manage, train and supervise student volunteers.
    Such other duties as are appropriate, and may from time to time, be requested by the Manager or their nominated staff.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

    The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential

    Rugby Level 2 Coaching qualification
    Minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A* - C (incl. English and Maths) or NVQ level 2 in a relevant subject area or equivalent experience.

Desirable

    NVQ level 3 in a relevant subject area.
    First Aid qualification.
    Full UK driving licence.
    Midas qualification.

Experience/Knowledge

Essential

    Previous experience of working in university sport.
    A working knowledge of rugby.
    Previous experience in coaching and leading a rugby team.

Desirable

    Experience in a Rugby Development post.
    Experience of dealing with a range of people.
    Experience of working in a bilingual (Welsh and English) and multi-cultural environment.

Skills/Abilities

Essential

    Good customer care.
    Excellent communication skills.
    Ability to work on own initiative as well as part of a team.

Desirable

    Ability to prioritise and plan in advance.
    High level of IT competence including web-based systems.
    An ability to problem-solve when required.

Other

Essential

    The ability to speak Welsh confidently is essential for this post or be committed to reach this level within 2 years.
