The opportunity

Design Authority has a central role in developing, maintaining and reviewing nuclear Safety Cases for the eight operational nuclear power stations in the UK. We have an exciting opportunity for a Safety Case Engineer (Structural Integrity) in the DA Sizewell B Nuclear Operations Group.

Responsibilities include maintaining deterministic and probabilistic Safety Case health and visibility, acting as Case Officer, Author and Verifier for Cat 1 and complex Cat 2 Engineering Changes, and providing Safety Case advice to Stations and other functions. The role involves being a key interface between the operational licensed sites and the UK nuclear regulator.

This role can be based at either our Gloucester or Glasgow office, and will be working with a mix of office based and home working. There will be some travel around the fleet required.

Pay, benefits and culture

We can offer a competitive salary from £54,391 - £84,892, dependent on experience and you'll be appointed based on the parameters outlined in the Nuclear Generation Company Agreement as well as your existing salary, competence, experience and qualifications. This is a full-time position.

What you'll be doing

In this role, you will be reporting to the Group Head and you will be responsible for:

  • Developing strategies for maintenance and revision of the Safety Case.
  • Producing new or revised Safety Cases for normal operation, reactor faults and hazards.
  • Acting as Case Officer, Author and Verifier for nuclear safety significant Engineering Changes (category 1 and complex category 2).
  • Developing and implementing modifications to power station plant, processes and procedures to ensure compliance with Safety Case requirements.
  • Providing Safety Case advice and maintaining Safety Case health.
  • Ensuring that requirements are met for plant outages and major plant modifications
  • Interfacing with the UK Nuclear Regulator.

Who you are

We are looking for and experienced engineer with a proven record of delivery in a safety assessment role within a safety-critical environment. We want you to contribute to, and ultimately take a lead in, technically challenging work.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of a HNC or equivalent in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or a similar technical discipline with structural integrity or mechanical experience, which is desirable but not essential.

You will have the ability to work across functions and engage with stakeholders at all levels while dealing effectively with differing stakeholder expectations and proven experience of delivery to stretching targets within a technically challenging engineering environment. You'll have a strong safety culture with an emphasis on application of engineering judgement to identify fit-for-purpose solutions for safety-related tasks and a personal drive with excellent organisational and project skills.

You'll be a team player with effective communication and interpersonal skills and be able to work on your own initiative and apply scientific/technical training to identify and resolve operational problems with a commitment to continuous personal and professional development.
