Newcastle Theatre Royal Trust is an independent charity that exists to bring world class theatre and creative engagement to and for the people of Newcastle and the North East. We are committed to giving everyone the highest quality welcome and service, on-stage and off.

Purpose of the post 

To deliver an effective Health and Safety Management System across all operations and promote a positive and just safety culture across the organization, assuring legal compliance and driving high performance. To provide competent guidance, support and training for NTRT personnel and associates ensuring active and ongoing engagement across all departments in all Health, Safety, Security and Sustainability matters. To lead the development and delivery of an organization wide Sustainability Action Plan and drive continuous improvement in line with legislation and best practice. 

Key collaborators

This role reports to the Director of Operations (Lead Health and Safety Officer) and will work closely with all departments and across all levels of the organization with responsibility for leading the Health and Safety Officers and the Green Committee. They will hold key collaborative relationships with the  Operations Coordinator, Head of Technical and Maintenance and Building Services Team. 

Duties include 

Health, Safety and Compliance

Culture

 Drive an organization wide positive and just Health and Safety culture to assure high performance.

Compliance

 Maintain an up to date knowledge and understanding of current Health and Safety legislation, best practice and industry specific requirements.
 Working collaboratively with all departments to ensure all internal and 3rd party activity is compliant and risk is effectively managed.

Planning

 Ensure appropriate policies, procedures and safe systems of work are in place and kept under review in accordance with the Health and Safety Policy, legislation and best practice.
 Support the Director of Operations with the development, implementation and review of strategic Health and Safety polices, plans and initiatives.

Competence and Training

 Provide support and advice to all NTRT personnel and associates relating to Health and Safety matters.
 Ensure all NTRT personnel have the appropriate skills, knowledge, training and experience to work safely and that they recognize the positive contribution they can make to Health and Safety performance.
 Responsibility for the Health and Safety Induction and Training Plan, working with managers to deliver in-house and external training programmes.

Communication and consultation

 Manage effective mechanisms for two way communication relating to Health and Safety matters, leading the Health and Safety Officers team and working with the union rep to ensure effective organization wide communication.

Monitoring

 Monitor Health and Safety practice and compliance across all activity taking directive action to proactively manage and remedy risk and non-compliance. 
 Deliver a regular programme of internal review, inspection and audit, working with teams to understand and identify areas of risk, opportunity and success.
 Review all Health and Safety record keeping as part of a rolling regime and conduct regular floor walks with NTRT personnel.
 Management of the Health and Safety and Compliance Management Software, ensuring accurate and timely record keeping for effective KPI monitoring.

Review and improve:

 In collaboration with the Director of Operations and Health and Safety Committee cultivate a dynamic set of KPI’s to drive and assess performance. 
 Review and interpret Health and Safety performance data to inform the development of policy and practice.
 Provide summary performance reports outlining key findings and action plans for continuous improvement.

Investigation

 Responsibility for the effective investigation of accidents and incidents, RIDDOR reporting and implementing corrective actions.  

Stakeholder management

 Act as the primary contact for 3rd party Health and Safety contacts including competent person services provider, enforcing authorities, UK Theatre and other key external stakeholders. 
 Identify opportunities to work with other arts and culture organization in the North East to establish a network of peer support; 
 Identify opportunities to collaborate with and provide advisory services in line with individual areas of specialism to arts and culture organisations in the North East;
 To contribute to a positive Health and Safety culture across the cultural network.

Finance

 Management of the Health and Safety budget ensuring effective monitoring of consumables and equipment and identifying areas for cost efficiency.
 Management of the Health and Safety Training budget in line with the Health and Safety Training Plan.

Line Management:

 Line Management of the Operations Coordinator. 

Environment

 Lead the development and delivery of the Sustainability Action Plan; responsible for the Green Team.
 Drive continuous improvement in line with legislation and best practice.
 Embed an organization wide positive sustainability culture and a collective responsibility for sustainability practice and climate action ensuring all NTRT personnel play an active role in the delivery of the Sustainability Action Plan. 
 Provide advice and guidance to NTRT personnel regarding NTRT activity within the context of the climate emergency, climate actions and associated risks; collaborate with key teams to identify opportunities for improved sustainability measures. 
 Act as the Theatre’s main point of contact for sustainability activity within the city, region, nationally and across the sector. 
 Maintain an understanding of and communicate key considerations set out in the industry Green Book.
 Maintain an overview of the climate emergency and associated activity, legislation and best practice, and communicate developments to key personnel and teams.
 Provide summary reports for key teams and collective meetings, including KPI’s, opportunities and risks in relation to environment and sustainability. 
 Management of the Sustainability budget

General operations

 Undertake duties as part of the Wellbeing Team
 Undertake Mental Health First Aid responsibilities
 Supporting the Safeguarding Lead in the delivery of the Safeguarding Policy and Procedures.
 Undertaking such other relevant duties as may be requested from time to time.

Duties as a member of the Theatre Royal team

 Ensuring that the working environment and practices conform to the Trust’s Health and Safety and GDPR Policies, appropriate Child Protection legislation and Health and Safety Legislation
 To take all reasonable care and responsibility for the Health and Safety of themselves and other persons who may be affected by their acts or omissions and to co-operate with the Trust in achieving and maintaining Health and Safety requirements.

Competencies:

Experience

Essential

 At least 5 year’s experience in an Health and Safety Advisory or management role.
 Generalist Health and safety experience (including but not limited to) Food Safety, Fire and Security, CDM, Counter Terrorism, building regulations, Occupational Health etc.
 Experience of Sustainability and Environmental policy development, delivery and management.
 Experience of policy and procedure development and delivery within an Health and Safety role.
 Experience of developing and delivering in-house training programmes.
 Experience of liaising with enforcing authorities. 
 Experience of leading accident and incident response processes.
 Experience of data generation, analysis and KPI monitoring and reporting.

Desirable

 Experience of Health and Safety reporting at HOD or executive level. 
 Experience of Health and Safety auditing 
 Experience of Health and Safety management within the entertainment industry or charitable sector
 Experience of Health and Safety management within listed buildings 
 Experience of using Health and Safety and Compliance software.

Qualification and Training

Experience

Essential

 NEBOSH General Cert
 Membership of professional body 
 Certificate in Environmental Management (IMEA, NEBOSH)

Desirable

 ISO 45001 Internal Audit qualification 
 Level 3 certificate in Education or Training or equivalent experience 
 Train the trainer qualification 
 Mental Health First Aid Qualification
 SIA badge

Hours of Work

32 hours per week. Due to the nature of the business occasional evening and weekend working may be required and TOIL will be provided. Hybrid working and flexible hours (appropriate to the role) will be considered. Due to the nature of the business and the role, the majority of hours for this role will be delivered at the Theatre Royal. 

Training

The post-holder will be offered induction training as well as ongoing training and professional development based on the needs of the individual and requirements of the post. An annual staff development review will be undertaken with the Line Manager. 

Holiday 

Twenty days annual leave (pro-rata), rising to twenty two days after three years completed service and twenty five after five complete years of service, plus public holidays and bank holidays. 

Notice period

One week during the probationary period, eight weeks thereafter. 

Salary
£33,068 pa pro rata 32 hours 
(£40,301 FTE) 
April 2024
