The Sussex route, which includes the Brighton Main Line and its branch lines, is among the busiest and most congested in the country, carrying just under 4,000 scheduled passenger and freight services each day.
Principally a commuter route to and from London, the route is critical to the regional and national economy, transporting high volumes of travellers from the south coast to the capital, as well as Gatwick Airport, the country’s second busiest international airport and a key gateway to the United Kingdom.
Brief Description
To influence the direction of safety, health, environment and sustainability within the route and lead improvement programmes both locally and at the national level. Within this role you will lead the Safety Improvement plan for Sussex working with colleagues at Route and Regional levels to ensure that everyone will get home safe and well every day.
About the role (External)
Key Accountabilities –
1. Lead national and regional improvement initiatives.
2. Provide route representation on national and industry programmes and working groups.
3. Support the development and implementation of safety, health, environment and sustainability strategy across all functions in the route and associated programmes.
4. Promote effective working by communicating good practice and identifying opportunities for innovation through industry research and benchmarking.
5. Develop investment papers and business cases to support improvement proposals.
6. Facilitate effective communication and engagement with both internal stakeholders and the supply chain.
Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications
Essential
- Ability to think strategically
- Experience of leading change
- Good interpersonal, influencing, communication and organisation skills
- A clear understanding of the principles of Health & Safety Management, Environmental Management or Project Management
Desirable
- Knowledge of the railway and construction industries
- A degree or equivalent level qualification
