SEMH Teaching Assistant
Location: York, Selby, Malton or Scarborough – North Yorkshire
Start Date: July 2024 / September 2024
Contract: Full Time, Fixed Term, Supply all available
Salary: £83 – £100 per day
Working as a Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) specialist Teaching Assistant in a school is a highly rewarding and impactful role. You will support students with diverse and complex emotional and behavioural needs, helping them to overcome barriers to learning and achieve their full potential. This position involves working closely with teachers and other staff to create a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment where every student can thrive.
As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
- Providing providing one-to-one and small group support.
- Implementing tailored learning plans and employing strategies to manage and improve students' behaviour.
- You will also play a key role in fostering students' social skills and emotional resilience, offering guidance and encouragement to help them navigate their educational journey.
- Building strong, trusting relationships with students, you can make a significant difference in their academic and personal development.
SEMH Teaching Assistant Candidate Requirements:
- The role requires patience, empathy, and a proactive approach.
- You should be passionate about education and dedicated to supporting young people with SEMH needs.
- Previous experience working with children or young people, particularly those with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs.
- Experience in a school setting is highly desirable, but relevant experience in other environments (e.g., youth work, care work) will also be considered.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with students, staff, and parents.
- Ability to manage challenging behaviour and remain calm under pressure.
- An understanding of SEMH issues and how they can affect learning and behaviour.
- Knowledge of effective strategies and interventions to support students with SEMH needs.
