Salary: GBP45,000 - 60,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

If you have very strong communication and stakeholder management skills that allow you to engage with people and teams across different levels and capabilities, then this is the job for you!
This is a new role in the BBC and will play a key in role in delivering an ambitious program to develop and enhance our existing staff facing accessibility services.
We are looking for an experienced and passionate Accessibility Specialist to support the delivery of our internal accessibility consultancy service.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
You will be the 'face of accessibility', leading on accessibility testing and auditing, supporting our procurement teams and engaging with external vendors to provide information and guidance on our requirements and standards to ensure that the Technology Accessibility Policy is followed. You will also provide advice and guidance to internal product owners and solutions managers, ensuring that internal products we design for colleagues are fit for purpose from day one.
On a typical day you can expect to:

  • Lead accessibility activities including testing/auditing
  • Provide accessibility consultancy to internal teams and guidance to external vendors
  • Support procurement to ensure that the Technology Accessibility Policy is followed
  • Provide Ad hoc accessibility support to internal colleagues where required - Signposting to relevant resources
  • Training colleagues in accessibility related subjects such as basic testing, accessible html, Aria and assistive technologies
  • Support operations team and other team members
  • Be our resident BBC Accessibility expert
Are you the right candidate?
The ideal candidate will be collaborative, resilient, patient and demonstrate good negotiation and diplomatic skills, being able to influence colleagues and senior stakeholders across the organisation to appreciate the opportunities of prioritising a user-centred accessible design approach.
As well as testing and auditing products there will also be an element of coaching too, sharing knowledge with colleagues in accessibility related subjects such as basic testing, accessible html, Aria and assistive technologies as well as providing ad-hoc accessibility support to colleagues where required, for example signposting to relevant internal resources.
To be successful in this role, you will need:
  • Thorough understanding of WCAG 2.1 with knowledge of 2.2 - Applying accessibility principles across all digital products, not just web pages
  • Accessibility testing and auditing - Desktop and mobile technologies
  • Strong experience of multiple assistive technologies - JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, Dragon, ZoomText - Must be proficient with screen reader and keyboard navigation
  • HTML, CSS and ARIA experience (JavaScript is useful, but not essential)
  • Report writing - Ability to write compelling documents with technical authority
  • Stakeholder management - Including software vendors and third parties
  • Strong communication skills with a creative, pragmatic and methodical approach
