Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the largest Microbiology Departments in England as a Band 7 Senior Biomedical Scientist. The Manchester Medical Microbiology Partnership (MMMP) is a collaboration between Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and United Kingdom Health Security Agency.

The Microbiology delivered from the MMMP employs around 130 staff and has a workload of approximately 1.2 million specimens a year, covering major clinical specialties including respiratory medicine, transplantation, burns, renal medicine, urology & paediatrics. The department embraces all aspects of a modern clinical bacteriology services combining traditional methodologies with laboratory automation. It has a friendly atmosphere with good team spirit and offers the opportunity for you to develop personally and professionally. The department is a designated IBMS training laboratory, has an extensive quality system in operation and is fully accredited by UKAS.

You must be an enthusiastic and highly motivated HCPC registered Specialist BMS with extensive post-registration experience and understanding in clinical Microbiology.

Evidence of previous supervision, experience in health and safety and quality systems is essential. Good communication skills are also essential to enable effective communication with senior colleagues and clinical staff both within the partnership but also within the Directorate of Laboratory Medicine and across UKHSA. As a Senior Biomedical Scientist you will be encouraged to have an active role in the management and strategic development of the laboratory.

Location

This is a lab-based role located at the Bacteriology Department, Clinical Sciences Building, MRI, Oxford Road, Manchester, M13 9WL.

The department requires staff to support the department in delivering a comprehensive Microbiology service over 7 days. To achieve this it is possible that you will be required to work within a rotational shift pattern which will include shifts throughout the department's 24 hours a day 7 days per week out of hours service.

*Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas. Relocation expenses are not available.*

Responsibilities section:

It is important through your application and Statement of Suitability of 1250 words that you give evidence and examples of proven experience of each of the following criteria:

  • Working as one of the team leaders in Bacteriology you will be required to manage the staff and work within your allocated areas of responsibility, requiring extensive in-depth knowledge. You will also be required to deputise in the absence of deputy laboratory managers and other senior staff as required.
  • Contribute to performance improvement, taking a lead for identified areas where agreed.
  • Provide coordination of and participate in relevant internal and external working groups and provide project advice, expertise and support where requested
  • Provide relevant and timely specialist advice and guidance on own portfolio of projects/functions.
  • work with members of their team to investigate the causes of any variance from their business area’s work Plan or objectives and proactively contribute to the implementation of solutions.
  • Management of a risk and issues tracking mechanism and its proactive resolution and escalation processes.

Essential Criteria

It is important through your application and Statement of Suitability of up to 1250 words that you give evidence and examples of proven experience of each of the following criteria:

Essential:

  • MSc in Biomedical science or equivalent
  • State registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Educated to degree level in relevant subject or equivalent level qualification or significant experience of working at a similar level in specialist area
  • Completed an IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Microbiology/Virology
  • Previous broad and appropriate laboratory experience within microbiology/Virology
  • Significant experience of successfully operating in a politically sensitive environment
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Demonstrated experience of co-ordinating projects in complex and challenging environments
  • Experience of managing risks and reporting
  • Experience of drafting briefing papers and correspondence at SMT level
  • Ability to prepare and produce concise yet insightful communications for dissemination to senior stakeholders and a broad range of stakeholders as required
  • Experience of creating and giving presentations to a varied group of internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to analyse very complex issues where material is conflicting and drawn from multiple sources.
  • Demonstrated capability to act upon incomplete information, using experience to make inferences and decision making
  • Numerate and able to understand complex financial issues combined with deep analytical skills
  • Experience of setting up and implementing internal processes and procedures
  • Knowledge of Financial Systems e.g. monitoring budget management, processing invoices and procurement

Desirable:

  • Experience of monitoring budgets and business planning processes
  • Understanding of the public sector
  • Demonstrated experience in a Healthcare environment
  • Comprehensive knowledge of project principles, techniques and tools, such as Prince 2 Foundation and Microsoft Project
