What will I be doing?
As our Senior Buyer you will be responsible for managing all buying activities across our Technical Services division in support of their day-to-day operations and delivery. As Senior Buyer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the seamless flow of materials, plant and services required across the division’s multiple revenue streams. You will take the lead on defining sourcing strategies, including identification, introduction and formal approval of suitable supply chains to meet business needs; assessing capability, capacity, risk and cost. On a day to day basis your duties will include:
- Reviewing of existing buying activities, suppliers and sub-contractor arrangements; in order to recommend on how improved value can be driven from the supply chain.
- Conducting market research to identify and recommend potential new suppliers and products; negotiating agreements to secure favourable terms
- Ordering of construction materials, plant and subcontract services and provision of logistical support to the Operations teams
- Collaborating with internal stakeholders to understand buying needs
- Analysing and optimising buying processes for efficiency and cost effectiveness
- Ensuring compliance with company policies and industry regulations
- Identify the need for sourcing projects and implement activities identified to completion
- Performing supplier approval activities as required for status on PSL, plus regular monitoring of supplier compliance (of company requirements) within the PSL.
- Identifying opportunities for process, productivity and quality improvements
- Providing input into bids and tender process and lead the supply chain involvement.
- Leading any subcontract procurement, including preparing tender enquiries
- Continual identification of any procurement related risks
- Working in support of our ESG Lead in respect of development and implementation of a sustainable procurement practices
- Driving a culture of constant improvement; identify and implement initiatives in order in increase effectiveness and efficiency
In order to be selected for interview for this role, we are looking for a candidate to demonstrate the following essential criteria
- Minimum of three years' experience within the Rail/Construction sector; ideally also with experience of working within a project environment.
- Proven experience as a materials and plant Buyer, encompassing strong knowledge of building materials (e.g. timber, steel), plant equipment (e.g. RRV’s) and tools & consumables used in construction projects.
- MCIPS or equivalent is desirable, including 'working towards'
- Industry-related qualifications are desirable, and could include Trade-related qualifications, ONC/HNC/HND/Degree or other relevant professional qualification.
- Ability to read and interpret technical specifications, programs and Bill of Quantities in order to determine appropriate methods and timescales for buying activities.
- Experience with procurement processes including RFQ’s and evaluation criteria selection process.
- Excellent negotiation skills with the ability to secure favourable terms with suppliers.
