Job: Senior Residential Support Worker

Reports to: Registered Manager / Deputy manager

Salary Scale: £13.00 - £14.50 per hour

Sleep ins are paid at £45.00 per sleep in

NATURE OF THE POST

The post holder will be based at one of our residential Homes in the East Midlands. Employees should note, however, that they are employed by Priority Care Services, and may be required at some point to work at other appropriate Priority Care Services Homes. The young people in the care of our homes will have a variety of difficulties for which they will need varying levels of support. In order to provide the required care, the staff team will work shifts allocated by the Manager or delegated deputy Manager, including weekends, evenings, sleep in’s (paid at a flat rate) and the young people’s annual holidays. Within this shift pattern you shall also be expected to include a number of administrative hours spent attending meetings, supervision, annual appraisals, training, and young people’s reviews. In undertaking activities with the children/young people and on behalf of the unit the post holder can expect to use the organisation vehicle/s based at the Home. You may also be expected to pick up on-call duties at various times or on a shift pattern.

The objectives of the Senior Support Worker is to support the registered manager and or deputy manager in providing leadership in the home and supporting both the needs of the young people and your Support Workers as their line manager. As a senior Support Worker you are accountable to providing a professional level of support in the home to a standard complying with the Company policy and procedures and Children’s Homes Regulations 2015. Due to the nature of the work at The organisation being one that is varied, and in many instances unpredictable, all staff are expected to work in a flexible way and at times shall be covering tasks not specifically laid out in their job description. Whilst the Registered Manager / deputy manager will guide the work of the Senior Support Workers, there is an expectation that if the need arises the post holder will be able to deputise in the absence of the Registered Manager and/or Deputy Manager and keep the service running smoothly at times the Registered manager / deputy manager are not in the home. In order to provide a professional services as part of a management team, it is expected that the post holder will be able to demonstrate significant professional development, evidenced by a range of transferable competencies, and that they have the ability to enhance the professional development of other members of staff they are responsible for.

At all times, the post holder is expected to conduct themselves professionally, to work within the current legislative framework and adhere to company Policies and Procedures,

KEY DUTIES

1. Provide a caring, safe, secure and accepting environment that meets the basic physical, health, social needs and rights of the young people. This will include supporting less experienced staff via positive and effective team working, to achieve high quality standards of care that are set and agreed by the Registered Manager on behalf of The organisation. This work will aim to respect and promote the needs of each child arising from their racial, cultural and religious background.

2. Participate to establish an enabling culture, which individually and in groups, actively promotes the young people’s choices to achieve optimal positive outcomes.

3. Contribute to the development, implementation, monitoring and review of systems and policies, which ensure compliance with legislative regulations and that high standards are achieved thus maximising quality of care, protection and appropriate control.

4. Supervise and/or undertake lead key-working responsibilities, including primary responsibility for overseeing the implementation and adaptation of young people’s risk assessments and in house placement and care plans.

5. Develop, demonstrate, promote and maintain a good level of awareness of safeguarding issues, assessing and recording risk. This will include referring any safeguarding issues to the Registered Manager and incorporating consistent boundary setting into everyday practice in order to ensure effectiveness in the prevention and appropriate management of challenging behaviour.

6. Make assessments of need and co-ordinate the formulation of plans to enable these needs to be met, taking into account the wishes and feelings of the young people, their parents and other persons with parental responsibility, and in line with legislation pertaining to children and young adults.

7. Maximise educational opportunities and achievements for young people looked after within the unit by assisting in identifying, establishing, supporting educational provision and contributing to educational reviews.

8. Supervise and undertake direct work that is designed to meet the young person’s needs as identified within the care plan, enabling him/her to reach full potential. Particular attention should be paid to dealing sensitively with transitions, and supporting the young person’s significant relationship.

9. Establish and maintain positive and productive networks with communities and other agencies to achieve optimal outcomes and to implement practices which foster positive working relationships with parents, carers, families and significant others.

10. Contribute to the assessment and appraisal of team members using discussion, direct observation and a range of other methods in line with organisational policies and procedures to enhance performance and take responsibility for the continuing professional development of self and others.

11. Promote a positive image of The organisation through professional presentation at meetings and clear, factual report writing.

12. Take responsibility for the promotion of safeguarding and the welfare of children and young persons for who s/he is responsible for.

Additional information

The employees at Priority Care Services work directly with the service users and can on occasion be physically demanding, therefore employees must be able to undertake all the requirements of the job and requisite training in full. For the safety of staff and the service users, training will be provided to assist employees to carry out their role, specifically the Emergency First Aid and Physical intervention training (this provides staff with the skills to carry out the sometimes necessary safe holds in a non threatening way). Employees will be required to fully participate in all training.
