Senior Clinical Respiratory Physiologist (Band 6) Full-time (37.5 hrs)
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Respiratory Physiologist to join our busy, team at the Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Within our expanding Respiratory Physiology Department, we undertake a wide variety of testing including complex respiratory and sleep diagnostics. We also provide a busy CPAP and domiciliary NIV service.
You will be self-motivated and have excellent interpersonal skills. You will have the ability to work under pressure and prioritise your individual workload, as well as be able to work effectively within a team and support development of junior staff. You must be able to provide evidence of continuing professional development and have experience in a wide range of diagnostic respiratory investigations.
The post requires cross site working (Luton and Dunstable Hospital and Bedford Hospital). You must possess a BSc in Clinical Physiology or Sports Science or equivalent BSc and appropriate prior experience working as a Clinical Respiratory Physiologist. RCCP/HPC registration eligibility is desirable.

Main Tasks & Responsibilities:
1. To undertake a wide range of diagnostic respiratory/sleep diagnostics
2. To analyse, interpret and provide written reports from diagnostic testing procedures.
3. To work as an independent practitioner
4. To provide internal and external education and training to consultants, specialist nurses and other health care workers through presentation and practical training.
5. Develop, implement and maintain high standards of quality control and sterilisation/disinfection protocols.
6. Maintain and repair highly complex, expensive equipment.
7. To be responsible for the training and CPD of Respiratory Physiologists.
8. To be responsible for the development and management of databases/ information systems
9. To undertake performance reviews and monitoring of annual leave and sickness absence.

1. The post holder must perform the procedures listed unsupervised, gaining accurate and clinically valuable measurements:
• Spirometry
• Body plethysmography
• Reversibility testing
• Gas transfer
• Field exercise tests
• Maximal voluntary ventilation tests
• Sleep studies measuring varying parameters
• CPAP set-up and titration studies
• Respiratory muscle studies
• Fractional exhaled nitric oxide measurement.
• Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (support lead)
• Exercise induced bronchoconstriction test (support lead)
• Arterialised/arterial blood gas sampling
• Hypoxic inhalation challenge
• Impulse oscillometry
• Long-term oxygen therapy assessment
• Ambulatory oxygen assessment
• Bronchial challenges
• Hyperventilation studies
• Full polysomnography hook-up
• Domiciliary NIV provision support
• Any other tests as deemed necessary by the Senior Chief Clinical Respiratory Physiologist
2. To have experience of and provide education and key practical training to community groups of GPs, specialist nurses and allied health workers through presentations locally and nationally.
3. Must be able to demonstrate high level of diplomacy, tact and empathy.
4.To continue to develop specialist knowledge and experience including sufficient CPD to maintain professional registration.
