Who we are
The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall departments. From roads to rivers, and from health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life. Our teams provide legal advice on the development, design and implementation of government policies and decisions, draft secondary legislation and work with Parliamentary Counsel on primary legislation.
Our vision is to be trusted by government to provide excellent services, to be known throughout the legal profession for the quality of our work, and to be the best employer for our people. We offer some of the most interesting, varied and complex commercial work in the UK, and the demand for our services is increasing. With this in mind, we believe it’s important to develop specialist expertise and experience, and when you join our team you’ll have the opportunity to pursue an alternative career path as a specialist commercial lawyer within the wider group. Our talent programmes help everyone, irrespective of background, achieve their potential and thrive, and you might choose to move into other areas by taking advantage of the opportunities available through our wider career offer.
The role
As a key member of our Commercial Litigation and Dispute Resolution Team you will line manage and develop staff. You could find yourself working on commercial contracts disputes, including construction; public procurement challenges; intellectual property litigation, and public law judicial reviews.
Collaborating with counsel and other external delivery partners, and helping to control the quality of their work is an important part of case management. We conduct cases in the High Court, the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court, Arbitration, Adjudication and Mediation forums, and use the full range of alternative dispute resolution tools.
