Vacancy: Senior External Communications Manager
Location: Farringdon, UK

As the Senior External Comms Manager, you will develop, manage and implement a global External media relations strategy and plan incorporating all parts of JM. Your goal will be to deliver External Communications across all relevant media channels, stakeholder audiences and markets. To consistently and proactively articulate business objectives, ambition, and purpose through coordination of the JM’s External Communications and supporting its corporate media work.
Your success will contribute to support the protection and strengthening of the JM reputation across all markets to help the business and earn the trust they need to succeed.

Your responsibilities:
  • Development and delivery of global External Communication strategy and plans encompassing corporate, financial, trade, specialist and regional media relations and stakeholder engagement in support of Group and business strategic plans, measured against KPIs.
  • Develop and lead a focussed, measurable, strategic, and proactive media relations programme for the CEO, GLT and other senior spokespeople, to build understanding and awareness of the JM brand with external stakeholders.
  • Build relationships with key journalists including financial and science correspondents, trade reporters and international outlets in appropriate market, as well as managing media tours and media briefings.
  • Take the lead on relationships with key external and strategic partners and identify opportunities for collaboration.
  • Create and manage proactive media relations campaigns; source and select content and channels, report on metrics.
  • Work with the Sector leaders, the Head of External Communications and Head of Government Affairs to develop the aligned corporate narrative and messaging and agree on priority markets.
  • Writing, editing and proofreading media materials, including the creation of press releases, talking points, Q&A documents, and speaking notes for senior executives.
  • Press office management, development of press office protocols and press release management across the business.
  • Support the Head of External Communications with the delivery of financial results and the annual report.
  • Manage day to day relationships with JM’s corporate PR agencies.
  • Lead on Group crisis communications and issues and provide training for site managers across JM.
Requirements for the role:
  • Proven media relations experience. The ability to work with and decipher complex topics to deliver stand out PR coverage against ambitious targets. (Essential)
  • Demonstrable experience in creating and writing high quality content for a wide range of audiences and mediums with a proven track record of managing company-wide announcements. (Essential)
  • Experience of dealing with contentious press issues and creating succinct press statements and briefing documents. (Essential)
  • Experience of crisis communications and issues management (including effective processes, management and execution). (Essential)
  • Experience in science, engineering, or technology sectors, either agency or in-house. (Desirable)
  • Strong working knowledge of social media tools and other related external communication channels/platforms including media monitoring and brand/reputation tracking. (Essential)
