Job description

Care Ashore provides a safe, supportive, accessible, homely, and stimulating community for seafarers and their dependants – for holidays, for respite, or as their short, medium or long-term home when they are in need. The charity is based at the 225 acre ‘Springbok Estate’, near Cranleigh on the Surrey/West Sussex Border.

We provide accommodation and support for Merchant Seafarers and for former members of the Royal Navy, the Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) and others with a maritime link. Our services are also accessible to those who have worked on British Fishing Fleets. Care Ashore is not Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered but does offer significant welfare support where needed.

Care Ashore has started a process of change and modernisation. With a turnover of circa £1 million and a recent capital injection, the charity is in a strong financial position and is setting out to bring all of its accommodation up to a modern standard. we also want to ensure that the estate as a whole is in prime condition as a location for visitors for respite and holidays.

The main purpose of this role is the management and care of the Springbok Estate’s gardens and green spaces, which form about 50 acres across the estate. In addition, the gardens team are involved with aspects of woodland management. The role is driven by objectives to nurture and renew the Springbok Estate, the charity’s base. Care Ashore also looks to optimise its income from the charity’s commercial activities, which provide critical funding to support the well-being and lives of beneficiaries and to ensure the long-term future of the estate and aspects of the garden teams work may support this.

Role:

Working within a small estates team you will have lead responsibility for the care, improvement, and maintenance of our substantial grounds, including the walled garden with 3 large greenhouses, the Japanese water garden, orchards, fishing lake and numerous lawned areas.

You will be working with and managing gardens staff and horticultural volunteers so patience and a willingness to teach others your skills and knowledge would be required, as well as sharing knowlwdge from often well informed volunteers.

Due to the location a full driving licence and own transport is essential.

Essential Requirements:

· College diploma in horticulture or provide evidence of equivalent knowledge.

· Previous experience in a similar role.

· Must be reliable, polite and courteous.

· Good knowledge of relevant Health & Safety and C.O.S.H.H regulations.

· Experience in cultivating herbaceous perennials, biennials, annuals, shrubs, roses, fruit and vegetables.

· Understand the principles of plant maintenance like pruning, feeding and identifying pests & diseases.

· Have an interest in creating and maintaining wildflower areas.

· Experienced in the use of powered machinery such as tractors, ride on mowers, strimmer’s, hedge cutters and leaf blowers.

· Have a ‘can do’ attitude.

· Be able to work in a team and be comfortable working alone.

· Willingness to support work alongside other estates team members including maintenance staff.

· Ensure that a high standard of service delivery is achieved by championing Care Ashore’s values, whilst complying with all operational policies and procedures.

· Getting to know residents personally and providing friendly engagement in line with their wishes and needs.

· To undertake occasional other duties, as directed by their manager, in order to meet the needs of the business.

· Good communication skills: oral, written, and interpersonal.

· A friendly personality.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Tractor driving, either with certification or willing to do advanced training
  • Pa1 and pa6 use of pesticides license.
  • Cs30 and cs31 chainsaw licence.
  • Hard landscaping.
  • Apple tree pruning.
  • Machinery maintenance.
  • Pond maintenance.
  • Fencing.

The successful candidate would be required to pass a relevant DBS check before employment can commence.

Job Type: Permanent

Salary: £24,000.00-£26,000.00 per year
