Job title: Senior Infrastructure Operations Engineer

Salary: £43,524 - £52,565(with a generous employers' pension contribution to the civil service pension scheme) plus an additional £4,052 London Weighting Allowance (if applicable)

Location: Bootle/Cheltenham/London with flexible working options

The challenge

The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is an evolving public corporation. Essentially, we're responsible for regulating nuclear site health and safety, nuclear safety, security, safeguards and the transport of radioactive materials. With so much at stake we're upgrading our tech - and transformation is happening rapidly. Think Cloud and Azure; sprints and scrums and imagine yourself at the forefront.

The role

As our organisation expands, we need to meet its needs now and in the future. In this exciting new role, you'll be part of the team responsible for all of ONR's IT infrastructure, ensuring ongoing operational excellence while helping to deliver the IT digital strategy and a pipeline of work.

At this level, you'll be providing specialist tech support for projects; coaching and mentoring junior staff; and acting as second or third line support. You'll also maintain Azure infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) working with third parties where required.

In effect, it's a largely a hands-on role where you'll use your expertise to the full. Other key tasks include monitoring back-up jobs, assisting with system restores and carrying out changes in line with processes, while dealing with third party suppliers.

The person

If you're an experienced Infrastructure Engineer, this is a great way to develop your career with specialist help and support. To join us, you must have (or be willing to work towards):

  • ITIL Foundation V4
  • AZ-104 Microsoft Azure Administrator
  • CompTIA A+
  • CompTIA Network+

We're also looking for a range of experience:

  • Azure, Microsoft 365
  • Intune
  • Network topologies
  • Troubleshooting skills
  • Microsoft Azure IaaS and PaaS
  • Microsoft 365, including Power Platform.
  • Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD)
  • PowerShell experience for automation and reporting
  • Backup management and monitoring. (Microsoft, Veeam and AvePoint)
  • Network technologies (WAN, LAN, and Wi-Fi), including management of both DNS/DHCP.
  • Application provision, patching and support via Intune.
  • Significant experience of troubleshooting and resolving alerts
  • ITSM tools
  • Support of ONRs audio visual equipment including Surface Hubs and Teams Rooms devices
  • Working with multiple 3 rd party suppliers to ensure incidents and requests are resolved or completed.
  • PowerShell experience for automation and reporting

In addition to technical skills, you'll need to be a people person. You'll be dealing with colleagues every day, so you must be articulate and able to express yourself.

Due to the operational requirements of the role, some out of hours work will be required to support the ONR Infrastructure.

Please note that you will need a full driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK. However, ONR is willing to consider any proposals put forward by disabled applicants that would allow them to do the job by any other means.

Why now? And why you?

As part of our 2025 strategy, we're committed to being a modern and transparent regulator. We've invested heavily in new digital technologies and skills to enhance our regulatory processes and manage information. Now we need people who'll embrace an exciting, tech-enabled future. Whatever your role, you'll share our values: accountable, open-minded, fair and supportive.

The rewards

We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with this role attracting a salary of £43,524 - £52,565 plus an additional £4,052 London Weighting Allowance if applicable. Furthermore, you'll be eligible for a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits), and generous holiday entitlement.

About us

ONR is a Public Corporation with a mission to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations. Our staff are drawn from a wide range of professional backgrounds with specialist inspectors to deliver our core business including civil engineering, radiological protection, human factors, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and nuclear physics. Together they're involved in everything from assessing safety documentation, inspecting nuclear sites and communicating our decisions, to training new recruits and representing the UK and ONR nationally and internationally.
