Job description

Closing date:  Sunday, 3 March 2024

Contract type: Fixed Term Contract - 2 years

The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.

We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.

These challenges need the bold science we support, but they won't be solved by science alone.

We are looking for a Senior Investment Property Sustainability Manager to join our Investments team, to help operationalise and implement Wellcome's carbon net zero strategy for its direct Investment Property holdings, as part of the commitment made for the Investment portfolio to be net zero by 2050 at the latest.

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

You will be leading the initiative to decarbonise Wellcome's direct property investment holdings and be part of the Investments - Property team reporting to one of the Investments Principal. This role is part of the Investments team that manages Wellcome's £37bn endowment, from which profits fund the charitable mission. You will be working with colleagues across the Residential Property and Commercial Property teams.

What will I be doing?

The Senior Investment Property Sustainability Manager will establish a roadmap to deliver the net zero carbon targets and strategy we have set for our direct Investment Property holdings. These include a historic London estate in South Kensington that Wellcome has owned since 1995 and comprises over 1,500 units of freehold ground rents, residential and commercial properties, plus other London residential and commercial properties including several developments.

As a Senior Investment Property Sustainability Manager, you will:

  • Work in partnership with in-house investment and asset management colleagues to deliver the carbon net zero strategy and targets. Formulate a framework to assess sustainability objectives that supports long-term economic objectives.

  • Devise asset level decarbonisation plans and establish practical toolkits to decarbonise, improve energy efficiency and on-site renewable energy generation across Wellcome's Investment Property holdings.

  • Provide sustainability advice in relation to development and refurbishment activity to optimise whole lifecycle carbon footprint and other ESG metrics. Oversee sustainability reporting including carbon footprint measurement and EPC compliance at the asset, portfolio, and corporate levels.

  • Undertake a review of our property holding's physical risk exposure as a result of climate change.

  • Lead stakeholder engagement management including with external property managers, consultants, occupiers, local policymakers, and industry groups.

  • Contribute to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.

Is this job for me?

We are looking for someone with :

  • Substantial manager-level experience in real estate and sustainability including establishing and / or delivering on net zero strategies and roadmaps.

  • Deep subject matter expertise across carbon net zero and broader ESG topics relating to property and the broader market and policy backdrop.

  • Demonstrable ability to evaluate and balance the opportunities and risks that comes with decarbonising property.

  • Adept problem-solving capabilities, preferably with a focus on overcoming the constraints of achieving sustainability objectives for Investment Property.

  • Excellent project management skills, including extensive experience delivering complex multi-stakeholder initiatives on time and budget.
