Salary: £60,000 to £70,000 depending on experience

Who are you?

As our Senior Mechanical Systems Engineer, you will have extensive line management and stakeholder management skills. The role will include working with customers, suppliers, our leadership team, engineers and project managers.

You will have experience in a broad range of mechanical engineering tasks including the development and launch of payloads, structural design and analysis, determining the correct hardware and its programming, thermal designing, testing and validation. Working with our experienced team of Mechanical, Thermal and CAD Engineers, you will guide them where necessary and manage their workloads.

Experience in most of the following areas is required:

  • Familiarity with a CAD package for both modelling and drawing, ideally SolidWorks (including ePDM). but similar products such as Fusion 360 and Solid Edge will also be considered.
  • Ability to rapidly generate new layouts / configurations to support bids and proposals, using a common set of components to meet the specific requirements.
  • Familiarity with interpreting the requirements presented in launch vehicle user manuals.
  • Strong understanding of methods and approaches for spacecraft level mechanical testing, including supporting standards such as NASA GEVS.
  • Good understanding of the impact of design decisions at the spacecraft ant mission level
  • Appreciation of requirements of other subsystems that impact the mechanical design / layout of spacecraft i.e. thermal, micro-vibration, AOCS etc.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project);
  • Excellent communicator, both written and verbal;
  • Confident working in project delivery and bid teams.
  • Ability to work closely with, and interpret the outputs of analysis engineers (FEA) to understand the capabilities of the design.
  • Experience with a FEM package (e.g. Nastran).
  • Understanding of a range of machining methods and processes for manufacture of components.
  • Ability to interpret and create high quality mechanical drawings, taking into account GD&T.
  • A basic understanding in general programming/scripting, e.g., Python, Java, C/C++.

What will you be doing here?

This is an exciting role which will suit an enthusiastic, self-starting individual who is happy to work on a range of activities from technical studies to small spacecraft systems and subsystems. You will be comfortable working as part of a team to deliver projects to a variety of customers including institutional, academic and commercial organisations. The successful individual will have the ability to flex their priorities to support others where necessary and be comfortable with a fast-paced environment. It will require someone who takes pride in their work, and can present a professional face to clients, suppliers and partners.

The role requires some knowledge and experience of designing, developing, building and testing satellite missions, a willingness to learn and the ability to work with others to identify and resolve technical issues.

While the primary responsibilities of the role lie in project delivery, the role may require some bid support and other reasonable responsibilities as required by the business. You will be actively encouraged to maintain a current interest in space industry developments and are expected to pro-actively identify business/technology promotion opportunities.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Line management duties including recruitment;
  • Co-ordinating and managing technical inputs to spacecraft mechanical design and development from internal and external parties including (but not limited to):
    o Payload providers;
    o Sub-contractors and suppliers (including launch providers);
    o Users;
    o Customers;
    o Regulatory authorities
  • Definition and/or management of requirements from Mission and System Level and derivation of technical requirements to subsystem and equipment level (with support from senior team members and specialists depending on level of seniority);
  • Management and tracking of requirements through project delivery;
  • Derivation and management of system technical budgets and margins, , including (but not limited to):
    o Mass budget (including MoI and CoG tracking);
    o Mechanical interfaces;
  • Supporting the definition, design, and build of MGSE.
    Management and execution of Validation and Verification activities at a subsystem and system level (including lab testing).
  • Collaboration with project managers to provide inputs to schedules; risk management plans; budget management and other project artefacts as required;
  • Plan and manage own work in-line with project requirements.
