Job overview
We are looking for a Senior Nurse Practitioner/Non-medical Prescriber to join our Crisis Resolution & Home Treatment team (CRHT) in Hastings. We want to support nursing development within our service and welcome applications from individuals who have already completed their Non -Medical prescribing or those who are willing to complete the necessary training and apply within the first year of employment. This will require you to demonstrate the ability to study as a minimum at degree level (qualification level 6/7 or as part of enhanced practice pathway).
The role will involve working with people who have been referred to CRHT via Urgent Care Services (Mental Health Liaison Service, The Haven, Street Triage), Assessment and Treatment Service in Hastings, GP, and some third sector partner Services. It also involves working with people who are experiencing a mental health crisis and require our support. The aim of our service is to ensure that patients are assessed and are able to access care as quickly as possible and to ensure that they are able to access the correct treatment pathway.
This is an exciting time for Hastings services as we start our community transformation work and unique workforce planning to enhance our multidisciplinary team in order to meet the needs of our community.
This post offers the Trust's £4,000 Incentive for band 5-7 Nurses & Practitioners, as well as a relocation package up to a maximum of £8,000 (subject to terms and conditions).
Main duties of the job
We are a highly clinically skilled team who provide dynamic and comprehensive assessment, treatment and care to people in mental health crisis that come into contact with Sussex Police and other emergency services.
You will need to have the skills and qualities to be able to work autonomously as a senior mental health Practitioner with an ability to assess people's mental health/ complex presentations, presenting risks and be able to formulate effective plans and strategies to meet and manage the risk involving liaison with the service user, family and emergency colleagues. You will need to be able to give specialist mental health advice, be able to liaise with clinical services and relevant agencies as part of the Blue Light Service and contribute to service development. The environment is fast paced and very demanding. You will need to have a good understanding of mental health across all services (Primary, secondary, crisis care).
You will be expected to undertake the role of independent prescriber within the service which will improve access to treatment and support a more efficient way of working.
You will be working closely with existing current team members in identifying best use of resources in a needs led service utilising patient focused evidenced interventions.

NMP Course Requirements
Applicants must provide evidence that they have met the criteria for eligibility to undertake an independent/supplementary prescribing module as follows
All applicants must:
  • Have a valid registration with their professional body.
  • Be appointed to a substantive post where they will have the need and opportunity to act as an independent / supplementary prescriber upon qualification.
  • Demonstrate the ability to study as a minimum at degree level (qualification level 6/7 or as part of enhanced practice pathway)
  • Have completed a DBS check within the last 3 years (NMC requirement)
  • Be able to provide evidence of numeracy skills e.g. GCSE Maths.
  • Identify a DPP who will be willing and able to contribute to and supervise the 'learning in practice' element of their training and provide post qualification clinical supervision.
  • Be able to demonstrate competence to prescribe in the clinical area in which they will prescribe following training.
  • Provide evidence of competence in history taking, undertaking a clinical assessment and making a diagnosis i.e. comprehensively assess a patient's psychological and physiological condition, understand the underlying pathology and identify the appropriate medicines regime.

Registered nurses:
  • Have two years post-registration clinical experience, of which at least one year immediately preceding their application to the training programme should be in the clinical area in which they intend to prescribe.
  • Must be allocated a DPP as practice assessor and a separate supervisor

  • Registered Nurse with current registration (mental health / LD/ Adult) appropriate to the job role
  • Degree/diploma level supplemented by specialist qualification, training, experience, courses to masters level equivalent relevant to the care group
  • Evidence of post registration training in relevant service area
  • Completion of Mentorship Course/ENB equivalent
  • Supplementary/Independent Non-Medical Prescribing Module (level 3)
  • Extensive post qualifying experience in relevant service area
  • Experience of supervising staff and students
  • Able to manage a caseload of patients with complex mental health needs
  • Comprehensive knowledge of interventions specific to service area
  • Awareness of Trust policies and service specification
  • Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills with staff, patients, families, carers and professionals
  • Able to establish links with other services and professionals
  • Able to effectively manage risk
  • To have a good knowledge of service objectives and to understand performance reports and how they relate to team
  • Able to manage and delegate tasks; participate in service development; able to lead clinical discussions in team; able to undertake audit activity; able to plan staff rotas as needed
  • To provide supervision for Nursing staff including clinical, and professional; to develop training sessions for staff, students, professionals and agencies; to participate in staff recruitment and selection, absence management and other staff related issues; to understand and manage team dynamics
  • Able to use IT systems competently
  • Physically fit to undertake duties related to service area
  • Able to prioritise workload, plan and organise diary, and manage report writing, attendance at clinical meetings, supervise colleagues, assess patients
  • Able to manage distressing and emotional situations involving staff and patients, manage and deal with complaints, incidents and SIs
  • Aware of policies governing area of work, able to travel to other locations county-wide, demonstrate support for values of the Trust, team player, punctual and flexible
