Job description

Location: Polaris House, Swindon, Wiltshire As a NERC Senior Programme Manager, you will have a strategic awareness of the research and innovation landscape within which NERC operates, and our stakeholders, and ideally bring relevant expertise. You will have excellent communication skills, and an ability to absorb, understand and present complex information persuasively to different audiences. You will have an ability to build effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels of seniority, as well as strong negotiation and influencing skills, leading to positive outcomes.  Key Activities Leading the scoping, peer review assessment and commissioning of new National Capability investments, following NERC policies and best practice, and promoting responsible decision making through equality, diversity and fairness in funding opportunities. Managing a diverse portfolio of funded National Capability investments, including managing reporting and evaluation processes which form part of ongoing performance monitoring of NERC investments. Managing the enhancement of seagoing science delivery activities, building strong relationships with NERC’s research vessel operators and seagoing science community. Leading on engagement and key external relationships with relevant key stakeholders and investment leads, including within NERC Centres, maintaining strong partnerships to maximise the impact of NERC’s investments. Managing budgets and resources, working with NERC corporate finance. Representing NERC within and outside UKRI, representing NERC on programme boards or steering committees, as well as managing relevant governance Boards. Activity managing and delegating to Programme Manager(s) as required. Deputising for the National Capability Leadership Team as required.  Although advertised as full time, NERC is open to discussing part time working patterns with applicants. Essential Skills Degree, or equivalent relevant qualifications or expertise, preferably in environmental sciences. Working knowledge and experience of the research and/or innovation landscape in the UK and the science areas and/or communities supported by NERC. Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to absorb, interpret and present complex information clearly and persuasively to a wide range of audiences. Demonstrable track record in negotiating and influencing effectively (both verbal and written media) across teams, the wider organisation and external stakeholder communities. Experience of partnership working and customer/contractor relationships, and an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and partnerships with a range of internal and external stakeholders at all levels, that result in tangible outcomes for the organisation.     A track record of successful project, programme and/or portfolio management, including financial management and the identification of risks and interdependencies.
