Job description

What if you could work with remarkable people on extraordinary things? What if the end result was something a little bit special? What if your role was mission critical?
For nearly 70 years, AWE has been at the forefront of nuclear weapons research and development. We have a critical mission: to provide the warheads for the UK’s ultimate deterrent - Trident. We also use our unique skills to provide wider UK government with counter-terrorism and nuclear threat reduction solutions.
It takes a special sort of person to work at AWE. What if that person was you?
We are looking for a methodical and experienced SeniorProject Manager to work on the crucial Trident Programme. As a Senior Project Manager, you will be working to provide positive evidence to support verification that the product/s meet, and will continue to meet safety and performance standards within specification guidelines. This is a fantastic opportunity to step in to a dynamic and complex Senior Project Manager role where no two days will be the same! You will be able to make a real difference to the safety of our nation, and gain a holistic view of one of our key mission critical programmes.
Location: This role is based at Aldermaston, RG7 4PR. We are located in the Berkshire countryside between Reading and Basingstoke.
Salary: From £62,440 depending on experience and suitability.
As part of our People Promise, AWE (one of the best 25 big companies to work for in the UK) has a range of benefits to suit you. These include:

  • Time to recharge your batteries with 270 hours of annual leave (including bank holidays, plus every other Friday off).
  • Opportunities for Professional Career Development that include funding for the annual membership of a relevant professional body, and access to mentors & training.
  • Employee assistance programme and occupational health services.
  • Market leading contributory pension scheme.
  • AWE Life Assurance policy.
  • Discounts & salary sacrifice scheme - access to savings on a wide range of everyday spending.

Whilst not to be considered a check list, candidates should be able to demonstrate some of the following:
  • Prior experience working on engineering/manufacturing based projects would be beneficial.
  • Dynamic and supportive approach to team management, encouraging and empowering team members to quickly adapt and respond to change, and to adopt the company’s vision.
  • Ability to be a proactive role model who shares expertise through coaching, mentoring, and developing others in all aspects of project management such as leadership, methodology, tools, and people skills.
  • Experience in methodically managing multiple and/or complex, high value, cross-functional projects through lifecycle and the associated governance, including stage gate approvals.
  • Skills to create and update all project documentation, including project management plans and supporting risks, assumptions, actions, issues & dependencies.
  • Experience of project management tools and techniques for budgeting, change management and project goal setting.
  • Ability to effectively prioritise workload, resources, and deadlines within high pressure complex environments.
  • A proven record to drive project deliverables forward through the establishment and leadership of a high performing and successful integrated project organisation.
  • Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills across all levels.
  • Demonstrable application of methods to track project deliverables including implementing key performance indicators and producing project progress reports.
  • Ability to lead and initiate risk techniques to manage complex project risks and interdependencies with efficient mitigation and contingency plans.
  • Ability to solve problems and deliver results through creative solutions and collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • Desire for continuous improvement through evaluation of both successes and failures.

There may be the opportunity to travel within the UK and overseas on occasion in this role, approximately two trips per year with some flexibility.
The role is based on site, with the primary office being behind card access control systems (CACS). Hybrid working is limited for this role due to the nature of what we do. For this role, we can work flexibly wherever possible within fulltime hours.
All candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role. It can take several months for clearance to come through.
