Job description

We are recruiting for a Senior PublicAffairs & Events Strategy Manager here at City Guilds to take our strategy to the next level, bringing our business insight internally and our policy positioning externally together in an impactful Public Affairs and external Events Strategy function. This role will see you championing skills development through a Public Affairs lens and engaging a wide variety of stakeholders through events in the benefits of skills development on behalf of City & Guilds!

You will be tasked with defining, designing, and implementing our Public Affairs & Policy engagement strategy taking a leading role as an internal and public advocate for City & Guilds, helping to promote us as the voice for skills across the UK and on an international stage. This will also include the definition and execution of our Events Strategy in a way that amplifies this work.

You will lead and manage a small team with Policy research/insights, external events and Public Affairs partnerships capability and work in a broader directorate where you will apply an integrated and collaborative style to maximise your own impact by joining forces with others.

You will be working on a hybrid basis with a mix of working from home and our London office (approx 1-2 days per week).

This appointment will be made on merit.

About The Role

You will lead on our Public Affairs and Policy insights functions and ensure that City & Guilds is recognised as a voice for skills with a range of influential stakeholders. This work will also support our commercial planning and help to ensure our business ambitions are met. You will also oversee a range of external events activity that contributes to the Public Affairs, Policy engagement and commercial marketing ambitions of City &Guilds. This will be designed through management of the Senior Events & Partnerships Manager and liaison with the Director of Marketing.

Our successful candidate will work with key public and professional bodies, industry stakeholders and politicians/advisors to shape and influence skills related policy in the UK Government, devolved Nations and MCA/LSIP regions.

The Key five functions of this role will be:

  • Strategic Level Public Affairs Engagement & Responsibility
  • External Events Strategy Programme and resource demands
  • Wider integrated team management within Directorate
  • Autonomy to activate campaigns and generate impact evidence
  • A high degree of proactivity and creativity.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have in-depth experience of leading and developing a multi-disciplined team across Public Affairs, Research and Insights and External Events. You should bring significant experience of influencing and building relationships across a diverse range of senior stakeholders and sectors delivering high profile public facing policy campaigns.

You will have a track record in leading highly impactful policy change campaigns with strong engagement and communications to help bring networks together. You should have experience of drafting materials such as parliamentary briefing documents, press notices and policy reports. Excellent communication skills will be needed including the ability to write impactful briefings for internal and external stakeholders.

You will have experience of creating and managing events programmes that help drive our commercial ambitions, Public Affairs engagement, policy alignment and raise our external profile.

Our Successful candidate will conduct research on key issues, building a strong evidence base to support policy prioritising and messaging. You will have experience of instigating and capturing research and insights to back up policy asks with impactful evidence that can help to shift outcomes.

You will have an in-depth understanding of government, parliament and political processes as well as substantial agency management experience.

You should be highly collaborative, bringing a creative flair finding new ways to bring solutions to long term societal issues.
