Job Summary


GKN’s Global Technology Centre (GTC) in Filton, Bristol is a £32m state of the art technology research and manufacturing process development facility which is a hub for world-class innovative technology for the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft. It includes a collaborative space for research and development with universities, the UK’s CATAPULT network and GKN Aerospace’s UK supply chain, to help strengthen aerospace technology and support the UK’s Industrial strategy.


We are seeking to recruit a Senior Research Specialist to focus on the development of process models simulations, with specific focus on the development of deposition based additive manufacturing (3D Printing). You will develop thermo-fluid simulations of Laser Welding and 3D Printing techniques and advance our understanding of the enablers to make simulation part of our day-to-day engineering toolkit.


You will combine strong scientific and computing knowledge to deliver cost effective, meaningful and impactful simulations of a state-of-the-art manufacturing technique

Job Responsibilities


  • Develop robust simulation methodologies which accurately model the behaviour of Direct Energy Deposition Based Additive manufacturing, as well as laser welding
  • Act as technical champion for simulation of welding processes
  • Understand and capture requirements and convert into executable plans
  • Model and simulate development work and development trials required to meet Work Package/Work Stream delivery objectives
  • Raise and issue high quality and detailed technical documentation, which is accurate and delivered on time
  • Engage between departments to develop and optimise computational infrastructure to enable simulation capability within the Global Technology Centre’s
  • Develop basic capability in colleagues to enable them to perform their own simulation work


How You'll Contribute


To help us make a difference, you’ll bring your passion and talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:


Essential:

  • Substantial experience in thermofluid simulation and process modelling
  • Experience in the generation and testing of code (Mathworks Matlab, C++, C#, or Python)
  • Experience delivering complex development activities according to plans
  • Experience developing and executing trials and testing including both planning and costing

Desirable:

  • Experience of the optimisation of computational resources
  • Experience working in Physics, thermal mechanical modelling or fluid simulation
  • Experience in Finite Element Analysis, Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics or other Numerical Techniques
  • Experience in welding or metallic additive manufacturing
  • Background in manufacturing
